Had the feel of two different movies.
I wonder if it was intended to be.
shareI don't think it was intended to be but it definitely does feel like two different movies. I always found the first half (boot camp) much more entertaining and the second half struggled to keep me interested.
shareMy problem with the second half of the movie is that it looked like they were in England NOT Vietnam. The really bad set design and almost exclusive portrayal of the landscape as a concrete jungle took me out of the movie and the belief that they were in South East Asia.
I don't think that Vietnam was just a huge jungle, but I agree with you.
It looked like a set in london, the light quality is whiteish and cold, and some Jungle is a must for a Vietnam film.
The camera work and Kubrick's style only added to make it look like a set.
Also, since he wanted 2 distinct halves, he should have shown the difference between the cold and cinical training vs the hot n chaotic warzone. Instead, they both looked organized and structured because of this set feel.
there was some urban combats in viet nam. big battle. vietnam war not just jungle and river. thats what this film portray, a battle in tet call "Hue". that what these marines in this film fight - most famous battles of viet nam was Hue, and it look like just this movie.
