Did anyone else find 'The Hitchhiker' funny?
I couldnt help but laugh everytime he came back. It was still creepy, but it was funny.
The segment is just a poor re-imagining of the Twilight Zone classic "Hitch-Hiker" episode. It even adds a racial subtext, and goes so far as showing a black guy being dragged by a car, which we sometimes read about in the news. But as others pointed out, much of it plays for laughs, and not being done very well.
The segment with the Indian wooden figure is also laden with racial subtext, pitting Indian culture against a trio of rednecks. One of the villains being an native American himself doesn't really soften the racial aspect.
I'm just surprised that the makers of Creepshow 2 felt that so much racial emphasis was needed. Not necessarily a bad thing, if done well. But as I said, those 2 segments happen to be not done very well. The best segment is, as generally agreed upon, "The Raft", a purely horror story that is satisfying from start to finish.
But there was racial subtext in "The Raft" too.
Only white characters.
One of whom drives a yellow Camaro (or was it a Trans Am?) Either way, a very white "sup dude?!" car.
The kids go swimming at the lake (playing on the whole "black people don't go near water" thing)
The music playing in the car stereo is rock. Pretty racist, only featuring white, frat boy rock music.
The enemy, the slimy creature, is black.
Poncho and the redhead girl had been in some animal preservation group. So what they're saying is only white people partake in ecological issues?
This segment was so racist. I prefer the others that depict minorities as major players.
