recast Kelly with Diane lane and this would be an epic 80s movie
I must be the only one who thinks Kelly just didn't feel right for that role

shareWhile she was hot as *beep*, Diane would also have been too young to plausibly portray a highly qualified civilian advisor to the US military.
Only Doogie Howser MD could have carried that off, and even then it'd have been a stretch...
Diane Lane was just barely 20 years old when they filmed Top Gun. Far too young to be an Aerospace engineer consulting for the Navy.
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!

fark off you piece of crap troll.

This board has a troll too?
I could have swore Diane was older in 1986....20 something
Anything ending or starting with some sort of Tej, Rajesh, Mulan. or any other half-assed Indian sounding name... lately taken to adding Hana at the end of a sentence... is all the same sockpuppet piece of sh!t.

Do you even like the Top Gun Sails mens or are you just here to make troubles and be racialist against asians hana!?

Take your For Hire Sail uniform back to the hire shop hana
shareSo we don’t have the balls to write “fuck”?
You must really pleasure your blowup doll!
you sound like you spent too much time in the brig for insubordination, CG sailer!
shareI like Diane Lane too, but Kelly McGillis is pretty great as Charlotte/Charlie.
I like her talk with Maverick at the bar when he's considering leaving the Navy, telling him everyone fails, but they keep going. Among other scenes.
And really, she looked pretty good.
I don't know if Lane would have done the part as much justice.
I just don't think Diane Lane would have offered anything to the role. As others said, she was far too young to believably play an expert in aerospace engineering. Also Lane was too 'cute' to show the contrast between the grown up Charlie and the little boyish man Mav. Otherwise with Lane it would have been a Red Dawn-ish fantasy.
shareI say forget the Aeronautics Engineer direction and go with the 'Admirals Daughter' direction. Go with Mia Sara or Phoebe Cates. Make it R rated, remove the volleyball scene and get even just a little tit action. Not too much lovey crap and then in retrospect we lose the homoerotic crap and make it a real Navy classic.
Edit - maybe even make it Vipers daughter or Captain Flybys daughter. Man I should write these movies.
You are taking a dump and they call GQ do you pinch it off or finish your business?
I'm glad you didn't write it. It would have been even more like An Officer and a Gentleman.
And it had to be PG-13. to get impressionable young men in seats to recruit.
Maybe you should read between the lines and lighten up.
Mia Sara/Phoebe Cates topless = An Officer and a Gentleman? What are you a eunuch? Thats like comparing Dirty Dancing to Taboo 14. Mia Sara and Phoebe Cates.....to those of us alive in the mid 80s and capable of getting hard-ons......were sex kittens of the highest order. These potential recruits (myself included) would have been even more aroused by adding a popular kitten topless in addition to the F-14 Porn already present.
I cannot recall a movie that was rated R in the 1980s that I was prevented from seeing. Every single Friday the 13th movies, every Freddy movie, Halloween 4-10, Full Metal Jacket, The Fly, Predator, Road House, Highlander, Above The Law and on and on. R in the 80s = most kids won't miss it.

Mia Sara was awesome, I could see her in that role
Maybe Jennifer Beals too but that would be pushing the 80s level into the stratosphere

Everyone finds it hard to believe that Diane Lane could be in that role cuz she was too young..but maverick flying 20 feet canopy to canopy w a mig, flipping him off and goose taking a Polaroid of it is just so believable...lol...oooooook
shareYes, as hard as I find it that Maverick was doing a 4g inverted dive with a MiG28 and Goose took a polaroid, that most certainly didn't happen. But call me naive, but most of the jargon, the language between the pilots and the all over behaviour at Top Gun, are taken from the reality, being well researched before filming. Many of the characters existed in reality. So I'm pretty sure there are "incidents" by pilots, which are classified.
Sure, Diane Lane is "hot", but she was way too young, she had just turned 20 when Top Gun was shot. And if you look at her roles in for example The Big Town, she doesn't look like a woman whom while working for the Centre for Naval Analyses, was seconded to the Miramar, and had an experience of at least 5-10 years and a master's degree in applied mathematics.
But before Bruckheimer and Simpson met Fox, and had they stuck with the original script, then she'd certainly fit in. They wanted McGillis's character to be a gymnast/aerobics instructor, or possibly a groupie. So there you go :)
Point of language: “‘way” is an abbreviation of “”away,” which is why the contracted word requires literate people to put an apostrophe before the contraction.
I know that none of you knows this. I’m striving to expand your knowledge.
I’m also sneering at the ignorance of internet posting.
How about Cher?
shareDiane Lane is 5000 times hotter than that oversized horseteethed Kelly McGinnis.
shareYou aren't the only one:

The movie is a fun popcorn summer blockbuster and I surprisingly still enjoyed it when I watched it a few days ago, but one thing that always sticks out to me is how miscast Kelly McGillis is.
She’s supposed to be this gorgeous bombshell who is also a badass who falls for Tom but she’s not gorgeous. Actually, without the pounds of makeup put on her, the fake blonde hair and them using angles she was not pretty in the face at all. There is a scene where she has a hat on and you see her face in full view and nope. They could have gotten someone much prettier for the role. I didn’t find her likable either. Charlie annoyed me more than anything.
I still find this films success interesting. Not that it was a hit but a MASSIVE hit.

wow that was newsworthy
some basement dwelling loser on some other website thinks kelly aint hot enough for him
Yeah, I'm not sure that the opinions on a woman's sex appeal carries much weight coming from a website for homosexual dude bros. To be fair though, while Mcgillis was never a great beauty, it's not like she was distractingly hideous in the film either, even if she ulltimately aged like sour milk.
shareShe probably wasn't the best choice for the role, I agree, but yes they would have had to have cast someone around her age. In terms of her build and age, she was actually a good choice in that respect.
