BO---this is exactly when i saw this film, Feb. of 1987. I was a junior in high school and it was a pretty big deal. My father and I went to see it. The film certainly did not disappoint to say the least.
As some say, i guess it did formally get a limited release date in December of 1986 but it was not widely released to the masses until the winter of 1987.
This issue has always puzzled me as well. To me it was 1987, but I guess it did make it to release before the advent of '87. Go figure.
yes pitt. i would say platoon is 1987 movie because that is when it is first released across entire nation and millions watch it together in cinema.
so that means it is like cultural event for many people like you and it is one event that everyone remember and this happen in 1987 not 86, so platoon is 1987 movie!
many movies get small premiere like in cannes or a festival or limited release in one or two citys. but this is not real release. it has to be when film enter pop culture. it cannot enter pop culture when it is show in three cinemas in los angeles or ny.
You're right it was released in Dec, 1986 in select cities(as New York) and immediately was a huge hit. It received a much wider release over the next few months as it's popularity soared.
