1986 - Top Gun #1 worldwide 357m/1b adjusted. Aliens #3 worldwide 183m/500m adjusted.

Forget Terminator Dark Fate bombing (meh movie, too woke) or Blade Runner 2 (too long, depressing, boring for mainstream audiences). re-ignite Blomkamp's Aliens sequel with full on xeno/marine/Ripley non stop action/80s retro nostalgia and the audience will show up to whoop and punch the air! "Whooah! Get away from her you Bitches!"

I'll be honest, I never saw a sequel to Top Gun working, but apparently it has and well exceeded critical and commercial expectations that I didn't think were possible. That said, the original was a pretty average, cheesy film so the sequel didn't have as much to live up to in some ways. Although we've had 6 more Alien movies since Aliens and they've all muddied the waters in one way or another. We're due an Alien movie that can live up to the first 2, and at least Top Gun: Maverick shows there is hope of that.

Be careful what you wish for. Blomkamp hasn’t made a decent film since his first one, and even that is coming under scrutiny and not faring well on rewatch.

Hell, even Cameron has proven he can’t be trusted with his own properties - he produced the monstrosity that was Dark Fate, and he still won’t release True Lies and The Abyss on blu-ray because he’s making more tedious eco-Smurf movies. He seems almost hostile toward his older, much better films.

There’s no equivalent of a Tom Cruise who can ensure quality control so it’s probably best left alone.

Newt and Hicks were killed off to remove Ripley's new family unit. Ripley is bald cuz "Da male gaze is toxic." No guns were in the movie because Sigourney Weaver is an anti Second Amendment activist.
