Wow, tv version still had transphobic scene with F word gay slur!

I'm shocked. The scene was horrible in 1986 and in bad taste then, how is it still being shown in 2021?

He is told that the woman he's chatting to is a man dressed as a woman, a "f-a-g."

Mick then humiliates her by groping her crutch, causing everyone to laugh and the humiliated woman to run away.

Can we remind people that trans have the highest rate of suicide?

I noticed the pimp saying are you going to "f--k" one of the girls was changed to "screw".

So why didn't the trans slur/gay slur get cut?

Americans are prudish and over-PC.

You're being slowly brainwashed by Stalinist LGBTQBBCGBH agendas.

I'm not sure which ones, but I believe you're short a few letters.

reply

And you are playing exactly into the hands of this poster who has broadcast his distaste for trans and gay people numerous times in the past.

He’s trying to be cute and get a reaction from people by pretending to be offended at something he himself is guilty of, being prejudiced and bigoted. He thinks he can stir up some anti-trans sentiment with his mock consternation but he’s not quite as clever as he thinks he is.

The scene certainly is in bad taste but it should definitely never be removed. A simple sign of the times and it’s still effective in showing how parochial the character was meant to be. It’s funny, but we’re laughing at Dundee more than trans people.

Nothing to be offended by and hardly worth mentioning. The perfect basis of an Intothenight thread, really.

" trying to be cute and get a reaction from people by pretending to be offended at something he himself is guilty of,"

spot on . too much of that going on

reply

Well said

reply

So why didn't the trans slur/gay slur get cut?

Because it can be viewed 2 ways.
a) Mick was ignorant and looked foolish
b) It was funny

I was not offended either way.

reply

You didn't feel empathy for the humiliated woman who was laughed at and ran from the bar?

reply

Is this woman the movie's protagonist? Do you want to see a movie about this woman? Because she surely has a life as interesting as yours?

reply

Does it matter whether they're the protagonist or not? In fact, the issue is that Mick is the protagonist, and he just humiliated an innocent individual (perhaps unwittingly, but he also shouldn't have just taken it upon himself to grab at a stranger's genitalia; that's called sexual assault). If Mick had been an entirely unsympathetic character who we were meant to hate/disapprove of, then the scene wouldn't have been so bothersome, because we could simply say "The guy's meant to be a jerk" and so it stands to reason that he'd behave like one. But because Mick is so likeable elsewhere in the movie, it's upsetting to see this scene, because it's treated like a moral victory.

And I say all of this as someone who generally likes the film, a lot.

reply

well now I do. Thanks for ruining our fun.

reply

I was raised not to laugh at others humiliation.

reply

Maybe not, but you have expressed disgust at others on a few occasions, which could be perceived as just as bad or even worse as laughing.

Your posts. I'm not going to go back through them, but I remember a few posts that you weren't the kindest.

Don't you find yourself creepy by making files on me?

reply

Don’t flatter yourself bubba. It took me about 10 minutes to find all that shit in your posting history.

Along with, hilariously, three posts claiming you saw a UFO at the beach on three seperate occasions.

Why did you ask for a source if you’re getting butt hurt about someone providing one?

reply

I hope you don't have a crush on me.

reply

Dream on, sailor.

Attention seeking homophobes are not my type, sorry.

Anyway, aren’t you due another ‘I saw a UFO at the beach today’ thread soon? Don’t let me keep you from it!

reply

I did look out the other day but alas, nothing. There is military war games happening at the moment so who knows if it was involved. Bloody big thing whatever it was.

reply

Hypocrite falls back on insulting others when proving wrong and being a hypocrite. It's so tiresome.

reply

Hilarious!

reply

That's 90% of all humor.

Rainbow Dash : [about her rushed and haphazard decorating] Oh come on, it's fine!

Rarity : If you were raised in a barn! Ahem, no offense, Applejack.

Applejack : None taken. Espeically since I wasn't raised in a barn. My family just happens to have a barn. Where I was born. And... spent most of my formative years...

Rainbow Dash : [very quickly] You were raised in a barn!

reply

No.
I didn't feel sorry for Mick Dundee for being a fish out of water either.

reply

The "woman" who ran from the bar? It was a man. He had a cock and balls.

reply

A character's dialogue in a movie helps paint that character for the audience.

Oh hell, nevermind.

I won't even try to 'splain.

reply

it's the trickery that's bad. i need to know a woman i am interested in is a real woman right away. if i'm tricked i have every right to be angry and use slurs.

reply

The taxi driver who explained to him that it's a guy said "a f-a-g" to further explain, it wasn't necessary.

reply

I would just look at it as things were different back then. Plus the main protagonist grew up in rural Australia where things like that weren't present.
Personally, I think Transgenderism is a mental illness. I feel bad for anyone who has it cause they insist they are something they are not.

reply

[deleted]

It wasn't the transphobia per se that bothered me the most, but the casual sexual harassment when Mick grabbed at the woman's nether-regions, without their consent (irrespective of whether the individual concerned did or didn't have a cock).

That said, I'm not a fan of editing films after the fact. Ideally, that scene wouldn't have been included in the original release (and it's ironic that when the BBC used to show the film back in the day, when it was a very popular hit on TV, it edited the still very-funny cocaine joke, where Mick Dundee puts a pile of cocaine in a bowl of boiled water to 'help with the man's cold', but NOT the offensive/demeaning material regarding the trans woman), but it exists, so let's not pretend otherwise. By all means, criticise it and highlight it as a joke that hasn't aged well, and should not be repeated in this day and age, but let's not rewrite history.

At least he didn’t call the guys a pelican.
