Going to miss this show - just finished it

I just finished watching the two seasons of Sledge Hammer! and really enjoyed it. Some episodes had great gags thick and fast, while a few were a little bland but would have a real gem in there somewhere.

The great thing about this show is how it was played so straight like they did it in Police Squad! and the lack of a laugh track (though I heard they did have one for certain markets).

Sledge got quite predictable pretty quickly and it soon got tiring, but once this happened for me I started to enjoy the reactions of the characters around him more instead, especially his boss and those hilarious "he's crazy" expressions his partner would do.

I recommend watching this show, but not just for Sledge but the other characters as well. His boss was a lot louder and meaner in earlier episodes and got toned down over time, but when he got a chance to laugh at something that happened to Sledge it was always hilarious.

A lot has been said about his work partner, Doreau. Seeing her in each episode play against Sledge and tolerate and kind of calm his behaviour was always a delight right to the end.

The closing scene in the final episode really makes you wonder if he was serious or not. I think he was, and he pretended he wasn't due to her reaction. You have to remember that season 2 was cleverly set before season 1, or before the events at the very end of season 1 (you have to watch it to see what I mean).

I just finished watching the complete series and I enjoyed it a lot. Not quite as much as Police Squad! but there is a lot to like about Sledge Hammer! and it has 41 episodes instead of just six.

It's a shame they didn't get a third season. I can only imagine what fans thought at the time with cliffhanger between Sledge and Dori. I think he was serious. And Dori didn't know how to react. It let me wanting me a lot more.

The scene where he throws his gun away was really shocking. But would have made for some interesting future episodes between him and Dori.

And Anne-Marie Martin, who would go on to marry Michael Crichton and co-write Twister, is not only one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen on tv, but she holds her own comedically amongst all the insanity in the show.

Overall, I give the series a very solid 9/10. I got both seasons from a thrift store on Amazon, in brand new condition, for only $10. If you see those thrift store sellers on Amazon, they are the most reliable sellers with the best prices.
