Best peformance Harrison Ford ever gave

Apparently Nick Nolte was originally going to be cast as John Book, and reading the 'novelisation' of the film you could see that the role was written as if for his persona in '48 HRS' - bull-in-a-china-shop comedy. That the film turned out to be so much more is down to Peter Weir and - perhaps mainly - Harrison Ford. From the very first moment you see the cop - neat in his grey suit, tense, tired, professional to his finger-tips - you know that this is going to be all about the human cost of being a law enforcer who is still trying to believe in morality. Not just another shoot-'em-up. All his scenes with Kelly McGillis, but perhaps especially the final scene where they are gazing hopelessly at each other, trying to find something to say to bridge the gulf that has opened between them with the proof that Ford is a killer, are stellar and unforgettable. Too bad Ford has never had the chance to act in such a good film again.

Agreed, but I would put his performance in "Regarding Henry" as at close to the excellence of his portrayal of John Book. The latter movie is good but not as outstanding as "Witness" (plot, character depth, screenplay, music and photography are a cut below "Witness," though some stellar performances by Anette Bening, a child actor, and the man who played the physiotherapist complement Ford's nuanced performance).

Interesting that Peter Weir didn't think that "Witness" was all that great a film at the time, and was surprised by the way it has held its value and audience appeal.

Never had a chance to act in such a good movie again? Dr Richard Kimble, best role Ford ever played.

Your Best? Losers always whine about thier best, winners go home and *beep* the prom queen.

I regard Mosquito Coast and Frantic as being on the same level, in terms of displaying a brilliant side of Harrison Ford that is not in some of his more famous films, but I realize I'm in the minority.

I agree he performed very well in those, but I didn't think they were great films. Mosquito Coast had no more dramatic tension than a travel documentary, and Frantic was pretty formulaic, though effective.

OK, but we're talking about his performances, not the movies. Yes, Witness is a better movie than The Mosquito Coast but Ford gave a better, more complex performance in Mosquito.

I'm happiest...in the saddle.

Ford is one of my favourite actors (but he does sound quite dull when giving interviews).

He will always be either Indy Jones or Haan Solo to me!!

reply

Harrison Ford has never liked doing interviews...something he has been well known for for years, which accounts for his apparent and obvious lack of enthusiasm when he does them.

Hmm - I thought the way the movie ended was absolutely heart-rending, but possibly that was down to the direction and my own receptivity as much as the acting. Whereas I always think of Nolte as mainly a comic actor. But perhaps I need to see him in more different films.

He was very good here, but Nolte is an even better actor. I could definitely see him being just as good if not better. Before he became the farce he is today, he was a handsome, wonderful actor. He got the Oscar with Babs directing, North Dallas Forty was great, on & on. But Ford was really good. Stallone here? No way.

reply

Nick Nolte has never won an Oscar.

What about Presumed Innocent?

Whoa, yeah. I'd forgotten that one -- soooo creepy and the tension buildup is exquisitely done. In that respect it reminded me of Jeff Bridges in Jagged Edge. Though Jeff played the bad guy and Harrison the good guy.

I'm going to go watch that one ( P.I.) again. Thanks for the reminder.

Ford has had alot of great performances. This is top 5, but Fugitive or Raiders is best

reply

I agree completely. He is an extremely underrated actor. Witness is the only Oscar nomination that he has ever received, and he didn't even win.
