If any movie was ripe for a remake with modern sensibilities, it's this one.

I just watched this on Prime. If any movie was ripe for a remake with modern sensibilities, it's this one.

Give it some updated fight choreography and more current action sequences and this could be a big hit. People tend to love the whole concept of regular guy trains in mysterious and ancient martial art to become deadly assassin. Especially, when it involves everyday items and activities like in Karate Kid (wax on, wax off) or The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

I loved the original but it didn't perform well and kind of disappeared off the radar.

I think for those reasons and given the passage of time, a remake could work.

That said it is a fairly generic concept, the wise master teaching a clueless ordinary person extraordinary skills. But its also a timeless concept.

Plus, the movie is based on a series of books so it could form a franchise if done right.

You're absolutely right on all counts.

It's obscure enough that a remake would be fresh and original to most people. To those that are actual fans, it seems to be consensus that the original is a bit cheesy and I think they would embrace a modern approach to the story, without the "you ruined the original" objections.

If done right, it does have franchise potential.

Liked this movie, was always expecting a sequel, but I guess you're right, flopped in the cinemas and kinda faded away

I'd love to see a remake. Maybe have Fred Ward as Mac.
