Anybody seen it in the movie theater? Any memories?

This is my favorite medieval movie of all time. I keep returning to this movie to rewatch it every other 2-3 years, it’s that good. I must have seen it at least 20 times by now. I saw it the first time in early 90s when I must have been about 13 years old and I instantly fell in love with it. It made a huge impression on me. Sadly I saw it only on VHS at the time in Russia, but I was wondering if it was shown in American cinema at all.

This never even came to my town, Ottawa, Canada, when it came out. I do not recall seeing ads for it in papers or on TV. I think it only had a limited release in the US. I definitely would have been aware of this kind of movie, being a 20-year-old Dungeons and Dragons and history nerd in 1985. I never even heard of it until about 1989 or 1990 when I caught it on late night television, and like in your story, it instantly became a personal favorite.

Yes, it was shown in theaters in the US. It didn't do very well though.

Great movie.

Saw it on cable a year after it was in theaters.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was hot!

Interesting that it was shown in the theaters in the US. I guess it was a limited release. Oh, JJL was hot.

reply

Very limited release.

I read that they cut out a lot of the graphic content too.

Not sure if the cable release put it back in.

As far as I know there were just a couple of scenes shortened for the US release. One is the bathtub scene where Martin(Hauer) pulled on JJL’s tits. And the other is where Summer was killed by the “jet spear” Steven launched at him. As far as I know it’s just those two scenes that were omitted from the original US release, and now they show it all on streaming here.

Her heard some of the rape scene was cut too.
