This movie should have made Judd Nelson a huge star....

He was the lead in this film and even the most enjoyable to watch I thought. Mind you I was only 15 when this film came out and saw it in the theatre, but seriously, he and Ally Sheedy were the best characters in this film.

What happened to his career after St. Elmo's fire?

Judd Nelson was considered a bad boy. His persona was deemed bad behaviour. He was a bad influence. Around 1986 the major studios had a regime change and more family value films where to be produced. This reduced Judd Nelson options. He also had developed a coke habit that in 1994 was deemed OK, even on set, but in 1986 was grounds for termination.
Things shifted quickly and he never recovered.
He secured From the Hip in hopes of shedding the bad boy image but was aware with a Razzie for Worst Actor. His second after Blue City. Ie it might have been a campaign against him and he drifted over to TV for work.
New Jack City was a hit but fail to lift Nelson back into stardom.
By 1993 he was heavily into heroin.

I always thought Judd looked too old for this role, maybe that hurt him or once the 80's were over he found roles more difficult to find due to his Teen Beat kind of image.

He's had a very successful career since then.
