In my opinion, although all kids channels have turned to garbage in recent years, no channel has fallen from grace worse than the Disney Channel. This channel has gone from a network that teaches kids what Disney is really about to a network that caters to teenage idiots.

reply

AGREED! and I miss all of those shows on the lists:( I remember Disney used to have the best halloween to..mr boogedy and the worst witch, disney's halloween treat, the show about disney villains, etc.

Unless they catch house of mouse or that new mickey's clubhouse cartoon, alot of kids won't know who mickey and minnie are.

Mousersize!

reply

Those shows were great! Good quality programming for the kiddos and in some cases even enjoyable to adults. I really miss some of those shows and its a blasted shame that kids these days don't have the luxury of watching them... unless we purchase the DVDs... which I have been trying to do on my meager income.

Some of those shows I had sort of resigned to never seeing much of again. Gummi Bears, Tale Spin, Rescue Rangers, DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, Raw Toonage and its two popular spin-off series: Marsupilami and Bonkers, etc.

Most of those have started to find their way to DVD... slowly. However, I think my chances of seeing Raw Toonage ever again is a big fat ZERO. Now that was a great little show. Do you guys remember that? Classic! Well, for 1992 that is...

Anyway. Speaking as someone who watched Chip & Dale long before the Rescue Rangers came on TV, it rather pains me to see what absolute garbage is on for kids now. For silly cartoons, there's basically two choices: Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents (the latter being quite superior). The rest of the Nick cartoons aren't worth watching and don't get me started on Disney toons nowdays. Like one of you said, they basically just cater to teenaged idiots.

For shame. Where has all the class gone? Where is the talent? I'd much rather see a show with heart like DuckTales, predictable or not. The show was creative and promoted at least some values. As opposed to nonsense like Ed, Edd & Eddy.

reply

I totally agree with you all Gummi Bears was the Golden Age for Disney though know I must say Disney has lost it's magic touch as have other networks the reason most kids are acting out of line and doing stupid things is because for the most part they imtate what they watch on television when I was young I used to pretend that I was A Gummi Bear having an adventure though know with such shows that come on tv I fear for the children of today I've e-mailed Disney many times telling them my concern for the new material they air though what I say falls on deaf ears in my opinion Walt Disney must be rolling in his grave due to what Disney has become perhaps I can't do anything about it but if we band together and e-mail Disney telling them how we feel we can help get shows like Gummi Bears and others with their good morals put back on tv or have shows that follow a similar trend put back on Disney to help save the children of today

reply

Yeah, I know. That was the age of innocence and good morals. Whatever happened to that?

im proud to be apart of that era when gummi bears was still being shown on the disney channel. i was about 4 when the series ended but they had reruns on for a few years after. care bears, chip and dale, talespin, the little mermaid, the kids today are missing some good stuff. oh and my little pony. im making it my mission to preserve these classics for my children, because disney of today is just crap. who remembers "under the umbrella tree?" and the torkelsens was great, that where britney murphy started...rip britney.

reply

I use to love watching the tv shows made by Disney such as Gummi Bears, Tail Spin, Chip and Dale, Bonkers, Ducktales and now the shows that Disney creates do not excite me to watch them.

Disney makes shows that the average kids do not watch. The station American Brodcasting Company (ABC) on Saturday morning would put on Disney cartoons with on or two non-cartoon shows. In the 80's and early 90's my sister and I would wake up early just to watch the show and now we just find the shows boring as they are all similar and some of the cartoons do not make sense.

Anyway like you mention Apocalypse1 Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents maybe the best cartoons on tv right now and I think companies do not have the heart to create shows with good quality storylines. When you watch old shows such as Tailspin and Ducktales the storylines are so unique and not predicatable that you would wonder what would happen on the next eposide of the shows, where as some current cartoons are too predicatable and people lose interest in the show. Until Disney looks at their popular cartoon and figure out why they were popular they will lose lots of viewers.

reply

I totally agree that the Disney Channel Programings have gone to crap. I used to love watching the shows on the Disney Channel and Toon Disney, now they are just other channels I skip over to find something better. Is Mickey or anything that pertains to Disney ever on the Disney Channel anymore? Ok as to what I use to watch, here goes:

Good morning Mickey
Mousercize
Welcome to Pooh corner
Dumbo Circus
Donald Duck presents
New Animal World (At least I think that's the name, It's been off the air so long I don't remember.)
Avonlea
Danger Bay
Mickey Mouse Club - the origional one
Zorro
Gummi Bears
DuckTales
Rescue Rangers
Darkwing Duck
Tale Spin
Jungle Cubs
Gargoyles
All the old classic Disney Movies, I really miss those!

reply

First of all, I miss the old Mickey,Donald & Goofy cartoons - those were something special.
During the 80's -90's, I used to watch:

The Gummi Bears
Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories
Fraggle Rock
Winnie the Pooh
Marsupilami
The Little Mermaid
Bonkers
Aladdin
Goof Troop
Ducktales

God's in His Heaven -
All's right with the world!

Good and quite true post, achowdhury21.

Does anyone remember the old Zorro tv series Disney used to show? I used to love that so much.

Goof Troop
Ducktails
Darkwing Duck

There were others but I can’t remember what they were, I just know they rocked! I hate to say this *(and I am sure that I will get crap for it once it’s said, but it needs to be)* I truly feel that Walt would (or is) “turn in his grave” if he knew what was being put on his name sakes channel. I mean, someone said something about teen idols, yea, defiantly. This channel has gone on the top crapiest I know of. I refuse to allow my little cousin to watch it … I just miss the childhood Disney, not the Teen Disney. Personally I feel that Disney should have two channels (like Nick and Cartoon Network) Classic Disney channel and Disney channel teen, I think that pretty much says it all … I miss the old school programs … don’t even get me started on Old Nickelodeon shows! But I miss Gummi Bears more than anything …

too bad nothing good comes on anymore, i'm really dissapointed that disney isn't that good anymore

aside from the house of mouse which i watch occasionally

edit: the disney in the mornings isn't so bad and i LOVE nick jr. lazy town FTW

reply

I agree about Disney being horrible these days. I'm a nanny so I tend to have no choice but to watch Disney, Nick and Cartoon Network with the kids. 95% of what is played on these channels is junk! I swear, kid's tv today is just insulting to the intelligence of children. Where did the actual plots go? Where did the heart go? Why doesn't the Disney Channel play actual cartoons anymore? Funny how the downhill of Disney Channel reflects the downhill of Disney movies.

reply

That's right! Toon Disney used to be really good, but do any of you notice that it's starting to be kind of like the Disney Channel the way it is now? Now, I still like The Little Mermaid, House of Mouse, Aladdin, and Timon & Pumbaa, but everything else I don't watch. But, the only new one I actually like is The Emperor's New School, though. Disney Channel, I don't watch unless my nieces are watching it, and even then I'm thinking, "If only they saw some of the older cartoons, then they would know what's better". The only time I watch Cartoon Network is at late night, when I watch Futurama, Family Guy, PeeWee's Playhouse, and Robot Chicken. As for Nickelodeon, I only watch Spongebob and Fairly Oddparents. I'm so glad that the Nicktoons Channel is still good, though.

I still watch for Kim Possible, lol. I stopped when 'Even Stevens' ended and now taken off.

I prefer Disney over Nickelodeon anyday. Even if i miss the old stuff (as listed by many posters). I prefer the 80's-90s Disney.

reply

I couldn't agree with everyone more. I didn't have the Disney channel growing up because my parents couldn't aford it, but we did have those occasional week long free previews. With my sister and me, this was a major event, almost like it was our birthday. Now I can barely stomach 5 minutes of the channel. The only positive I can say is with all these shows coming on DVD, we can introduce our children and others to these great shows and show them that what they have now is junk. I recently babysat for my best friend's son. I took over my completely goofy collection and my classic Chip N' Dale DVD. He loved them. He constantly asks me to bring Chip N' Dale over. Once rescue rangers came out I let him borrow that and he loved it just as much. It just goes to show what wonderful cartoons these were.

In addition, with all the talk about what TV shows are teaching our kids now, it's amazing hollywood doesn't look back to the 80's to see how they can satisfy parents and kids. Examples: Someone mentioned Mousercise, which I completely forgot about until they mentioned it. With all the talk of child obescity (sp?) I'm suprised someone at Disney hasn't said let's bring this back. I was never a big fan of exercising, but I got up and moved when that show came on. Someone mentioned the morals of the Gummi Bears, Ducktales, etc. I would also like to add, although not Disney, He-man and G. I. Joe. Everyone talks about morals, but these shows said if you don't get it in the show, we will make sure you have it at the end. Disney always seemed alot better at showing the morals within the show. Either way you got stuff like, fight only if you absolutely must [Gummi Bears bouncing over an Ogres head, hitting their back and knocking them over to escape], the Golden Rule [remember the episode of Ducktales where scrooge looses his money and then has to get help from those that he ignored when he had money], family relationships [Max and Goofy in Goof Troop], etc. I could go on and on, but all of you seem to remember. Like has been said before, I wish there was something we could do, but unless we do something like a massive demonstration on the Washington DC Mall, it seems no ones going to listen.

reply

Here's the only Disney stuff I really like:

Cartoons
Gummi Bears[10]
Chip N' Dale Rescue rangers[10]
Talespin [10]
Ducktales[10]
Darkwing Duck[9.75]

Movies
Chronicles of Narnia:The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe[10]
Great Mouse detective[10]
Rescuers Down Under[10]
Ducktales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp[9.75]
Aladdin[9]

Books
Kingdom Hearts[10]
Kingdom Keepers[10]

I, for one will not miss the vintige Mickey Mouse & Friends cartoons one single BIT. They're one the worst cartoons EVER! How they're so popular & loved today is beyond me. And Disney is still better than when Walt was around[watch Chronicles of Narnia & read KK & KH(or play it), & you'll see what I mean]. Pre 1985 Disney is beyond a joke. But I still love Disney from 1985[first ep of Gummi Bears] to 1995[last ep of Darkwing Duck].

Yes I remember the cartoon with Donald Duck Huey,Duey, and Louey you can get that cartoon when you buy the Black Cauldron on DvD which is another thing We talk about how disney has essentially died this is apprative if you watch the Black Cauldron my favorite disney film after its release disney offical disowned it and didn't even remaster it when it was released on DvD that shows you how sorry Disney has gotten in my opion all they care about is making money and not the good heart warming films that Walt buit the company on. MY FRIENDS THE TIME HAS COME THIS MUST NOT CONTINUE DISNEY HAS ALL BUT ABANDONED TRADITONAL ANIMATION FOR CGI AND FILMS AND SHOWS OF LESSER CONTENT LET US START A PETION TO DISNEY OUR VOICES TOGETHER CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE I CAN'T JUST SIT IDLY BY AND LET THIS HAPPEN IF NOT FOR OURSELVES LETS DO IT FOR THE CHILDREN.

About the only good tradional animated films Disney Releases anymore is by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata of Studio Ghibli in Japan such as My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa and the valley of the wind, Spirited Away, Kikis Delivery Service, Howls Moving Castle, Castle in the sky, and My Neighbors the Yamadas these films when released are great sucesses but disney is know refusing to release Only Yesterday in America even though they have the rights how shrewd is that and don't even get me started on those crummy direct to DvD disney Sequels have their writers lost all their creativity disney's crazy did you hear next year their going to release a Cinderalla three how long is this going to continue.

reply

It's sad that Toon Disney even turned into crap. I liked the fact that Spiderman was on it and X-Men too and now all I see is Power Rangers. I liked watching Ducktales as well. Now I don't even think that's on. Anyway back in the day I loved watching Gummi Bears on disney channel, they had it on for an hour a few years back.

reply

Yeah, Disney now sucks in the animation department. In addition to Cinderella 3, there's also a 3rd Little Mermaid in the works! Why Disney, WHY WHY WHY?! Why do you make cheapquels for overrated stuff(although to be fair LM isn't that bad, the scene with the French Chef is one of the funniest Disney moments) & ignore your true masterpieces like Gummi Bears, Talespin & Rescue Rangers?.

reply

In my Opinion Disney's last great Masterpiece was brother bear pixar's work is great but it's only contracted by disney and now disney is resigned to making crappy CGI films instead of traditional 2-D films which are to me an artform CGI is great don't get me wrong but I have more adrimation for hand drawn animation and movies that teach morals and have great plotlines which disney's current work is lacking. They now a days are just regurgitating other peoples work and modernizing them. Such as their new CGI film Meet the Robinson's which is a new version of Babes in Toyland. Disney's own animators have even gotten feed up with them in the eighties some of their key animators left disney to make tradional 2-D animation films to go up against disney and show them what the public really enjoys some of the films these animators contributed to were the Secrets of Nim and An American Tale two of my favorite animated films. Alas it is a sad day for fans of disney when they turn from the public views to their own concieted ideals Walt used to listen to his fans but today our voices fall on death ears perhaps we should shout louder.

reply

Yeah Brother Bear wasn't that bad yet it got some 2 star reviews. I miss the old fashion cartoon movies. There's too many 3-D stuff these days.

Growing up in the early 80's (I was born in 76), the Disney Channel was a staple of our household. My father and mother grew up in the 40's and 50's respectively. Dad remembered watching News Reels and the cartoons in the theatres as a kid (he was born in 36). Mom remembered watching the Mickey Mouse Club every morning in the 50's.

My sister and I grew up watching the Disney Channel. One TV was constantly on that channel all the time - while my parents watched whatever they wanted on the other. There was never any fight as to what we would watch.

When I was sick, I would have to stay home, and believe me, soap operas are not interesting to a 10 year old. I would watch "The Wonderful World of Disney" during those groggy mornings when I had strep. I'd sit and watch about nature, or technology, or whatever old Walt would talk about.

The Gummi Bears, and Tailspin were my two favorites. The morals and story held tru - and I agree so much with everyone else...they had heart. Above all else. If you know your Disney History, Roy E. Disney was in charge of the animation department at this time. After he left in the early 90's is when everything went to heck. I think that was shortly after Aladdin.

In my opinion, Disney stopped being Disney after that. The stories and movies lost that magic. Lion King was OK - but did not have that special something. Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast did.

The crap, and I will say crap, that is on these days for kids is horrible. I think it started in the 80's with commercialization and toys. Everyone wanted something flashier and more "out there." Soon we had shows that were nothing but who could get laughs. Dont get me started on Sponge Bob. Pathetic. No morals, no story, and for laughs they rely on physical slapstick. I guess in a way vaudville is back. The problem is - you can only fall on your kiester so many times until it isn't funny anymore.

I've had the Gummi Bears running constantly since I got it. Im glad DvD's dont wear out. I never tire of the episodes. Thank God they're back!

I'm also getting the DvD as presents for my nieces and nephews - and a few friends who also remember the show growing up.

reply

I was born in 1980, and living in South Africa, we didn't have the Disney Channel. In fact, we only got it on satellite this year!

We did, though, get most of the Disney shows and Gummi Bears was definitely one of my favourites. I loved Duck Tales too. I think that the kids of today are really missing out on the great cartoons we grew up on. What also makes them so memorable are the great theme tunes of the 80s and 90s. I'd love to know who sings the Gummi Bears theme song. I think he has the most beautiful voice.
