Dorothy and Rose moved in...

I think this may have been said on the IMDb board, but when Dorothy and Rose (Sophia, too) moved into Blanche's house all they had were a few boxes. You would think people their age would have accumulated furniture, dishes and various items, but they only had a few boxes.

Obviously there would have been no place to put it in Blanche's house, but I don't remember them ever explaining it like saying, "My dining set went to my daughter. My bedroom set went to my son." No doubt this really happens because I have an aunt who moved to California when she was about 50 to be near her daughters and she now lives in a small apartment, so she would not have been able to load up everything in her house and move it across the country into a small apartment. Even though I'm not totally sure, but I think some of it she gave away, some things she threw away and other things ended up with her daughters since they have houses and children.

I'm sure a lot of giving away happened. I think when people get older they realize having a bunch of stuff is a burden. Every time I move I am reminded of this fact.

You know I never noticed that before! Most likely they sold a bunch of items in an estate sale or something like that.

I didn't think too much of it either at first, until a few years ago my grandmother died at 90 and it took us almost two weeks to remove everything out of her house. Most of it family members took home, but the rest was given to Goodwill.

Yes I think it's the "give away" thing that a lot older people do. My grandmother was widowed fairly young. She was only 55. She remained in her home but in her later years it was too much. She moved into a small apartment and in the process gave away most of her furniture, her silver, china, etc. to family members. It seemed like every week my dad was bringing home something else that she gave him.

My mom keeps getting rid of stuff all the time. She's almost eighty. Every week she's trying to give me stuff! But I am also getting at that age where I want to get rid of things too.

On the Golden Girls I am assuming that after Sophia's stroke, Dorothy sold or gave away most of her mother's things. I think Dorothy figured that her mother would no longer be living alone anymore.

I'm sure Sophia would have given up her things years before... Probably when she left Brooklyn.

Probably true. I haven't seen the early episodes of this show in years. So I just don't remember their backstory. Was she living with Dorothy at the time of her stroke? If so, that makes sense. Sophia probably sold or gave away most of her furniture, dishes,etc. back then.

The story originally was Sophia ran away from the home and showed up. Later on she did live with them and Dorothy helped her recurpurate.
