Avatar Similarities
Noticed many similarities and wonder if James Cameron was inspired by this classic?

shareI would assume someone like James Cameron is a big Miyazaki fan.
shareI doubt it.
While they both have environmental messages and there are two destructive forces, one for the planet and one against (in very simple terms), I think any similarities are coincedental.
Cut off a wolf's head and it still has the power to bite.
They aren't anything alike, really. There's some unavoidable similarities due to shared messages but that's about it. Nausicaa has antecedents but it's far more original than Avatar. Avatar is just Dances With Wolves in space.
shareJC is a huge fan of Ghibli, Akira, Ghost in The Shell and other anime as i guess he was influenced by this.
As much as The Matrix is to Ghost in The Shell and Akira.

I found the story and characters and creatures more inspired in Nausica
shareyepp. I noticed similarities between avatar and miyazaki's nausicaa, laputa (with the home tree), and princess mononoke. but miyazaki is waaaaay better.

Did you know Cameron is a Ghibli and anime fan?

I felt a strong connection between the two movies , but rather than dismissing them as too similar, I couldn't help but feel they were related, like PM was part1 of the story and Nausicaa was part2. Here's why: notice that in the beginning of Nausicaa they mention that it is a world well into the future, destroyed by nature's forces but ultimately due to man's own wrongdoings. Princess Mononoke is story that explains why the world ended up the way it did in Nausicaa. Its possible that Miyazaki meant for the two movies to resemble each other closely.
shareI saw it last night and the parts Cameron took for Avatar were painfully obvious.
shareAvatar reminded me more of Princess Mononoke than NausicaƤ.
