Yeah there's definitely at least two different types of Miyazaki films. The epic stories that you obviously prefer (and I do love some of these), then his personal films Porco Rosso and The Wind Rises would probably form another category, but my favourites of his are the intimate ones. There's three of them: Ponyo, Kiki and, my favourite, Totoro. I've never seen anything else like these 3 films. There's almost no conflict, which most screenwriting teachers would tell you is basically a mistake, draw a red line through your script and send you to the back of the class, but actually what it does is it enables Miyazaki to focus almost entirely on character, and on a strong sense of place. These films create vivid worlds, every bit as wondrous as those in Laputa or Princess Mononoke, but what elevates these ones, in my opinion, are the scenes that take place in these worlds. Think of the bus stop scene in Totoro or the scene where Ponyo discovers that she loves ham. These scenes don't really move the plot forward but who cares when you can just sit back and watch these wonderful characters interacting in these amazing worlds. I think these intimate moments are what Miyazaki is best at.
"So, are you gonna kill me Snake?"
"I'm too tired. Maybe later."
