this movie was incredibly lame

i liked princess mononoke, spirited away, howl's moving castle.

but this was just too much. it combined the worst elements of all three of those movies.

the sentimentality dripping off everything, the in-your-face environmentalist message...the incredibly annoying, schizophrenic protagonist who had to vocalize every single emotion she was experiencing for the audience.

not to mention the ludicrousness of gigantic warships being shot down with regular bullets by some guy in an x-wing fighter.

'WHO KNEW HOW WONDERFUL AND CARING THE OHM COULD BE?!' i found myself facepalming near the end of the movie, as hard as i tried to like it.

anyway flame away

I don't know what a troll is actually but you apparently seem to be one, according to the first replyers... replyees?... well the first couple comments. Anyway, to the point, I just saw the movie to see what the fuss is about, and I understand what you mean. I especially agree with the whole "vocalizing emotions" thing, but they do it in almost every serious anime out there.

reply

Did you watch it in Japanese or English? This is one Miyazaki movie where I prefer the English and there really isn't much "vocalizing emotions". I love Alison Lohman's voice as Nausicaa.

This movie is a masterpiece though. Watch it again sometime and you'll see the greatness in it eventually. I love it more each time I watch it and I've seen it probably 10 times throughout the years.

reply

Well I did see it in English, so there is that. it still seemed very drawn out at times, But in no a way a horrible movie, I'm just nit picking. XD

This thread made me facepalm.

I kinda love the protagonist and this movie, even if it does come across as a tad heavy-handed.

I'm not going there to die. I'm going to find out if I'm really alive.

reply

You've just gotta bear in mind it was made in 1984, when people had to be hit in the face with environmental messages. Unlike today where we have a pretty good awareness of the basic issues.

reply

So you complain about a smaller ship shooting down bigger ships, yet your are okay with movies that have scarecrows bouncing around with little flames talking... Righttt, that's not ludicrous at all.

How do you know those are regular bullets anyway? Did you build the ship and know what type of ammunition it takes.

This movie is the epitmoe of an epic sci fi fantasy. So much that there has been nothing to match it since. Nausicaa is also a young woman who lost her father to an invading kingdom, maybe she's alittle on edge and unstable due to so many happening to her beloved land.

This is my favorite piece of Miyazaki's cause it has a great cohesion and great pacing narative.

Happens all the time in the real world, what do you suppose fighter planes are FOR!
Put a 747 against an F-16 and which do you think will win?

A) you're a kid.

B) you're wrong.

I agree that the ending was cliche and the people's reactions were overly stupid. And I too was annoyed by the princess talking to herself at the start. But the incredible story more than made up for that for me, so I still liked the movie.

Sometimes, the best answer is a more interesting question.

reply

The only bad thing I have to say about this film is the underdeveloped secondary characters (Lord/Master Yupa, Asbel, Mito, etc.) - Nausicaa gets about 90% of the action, the remaining 10% relocated to exposition for the remaining characters and the anticlimactic fight sequence at the film's climax.

The ending is crap, too - so that's two bad things.

reply

This is all down to the usual problem of a film trying to tell a story originating from another source, in this case Miyazaki`s own manga.
Just about all the things you don`t like are changes from that version to fit the plot into a screenplay.

I've been trying to find Miyazaki's manga online... but no luck. I thought that by reading the master's manga, my perception on this film might change and I might think a little less critically of it.

reply

Hmm.... that`s odd considering I`ve been seeing copies of a new English language version by Viz media for sale all over the place during the last year or so.
This version is rather nice as the volumes are larger than the older trade paperback size and laid out in the Japanese `backwards` style rather than a standard Western format.

You might give EBay a try since a quick trawl by me after reading your post turned up a good number of hits.
Here`s an example,
