I'm watching it now as I couldn't see the new movie in cinemas due to a cough, but I suppose it's not bad at all!
The story is easy to understand, the Atreides are honourable and the Harkonnens are icky bastards, and I don't mind the inner monologues at all, it helps to advance the plot.
The only sequence I didn't like was the trip by the Atreides to Arrakis itself, a very trippy sequence apparently caused by that sentient worm in the tank at the start.
I've still got 40 or so minutes to go, but it's been interesting so far.
OMG I just watched the new one, and it makes the 1984 version look like a fricking masterpiece!
in the 1984, the sets, the clothes, even the dated effects are glorious, and in the new one, they are fine but dull.
yes, dated FX never stand up, but what was shown in them was much more visually interesting that what is in the new version.
This is not a great movie, but it fits in more interesting things than the new one does, AND this completes a whole story, not a drawn out half of one.
Agreed. All I ask of FX from any film, from any decade, is whether the filmmakers did the best they could with what was available & feasible then. If so, then I have no complaints. For instance, the FX from Jason and The Argonauts still work for me today, because they were imaginative & well-integrated into the story. As do the FX from the original King Kong. And the same for the 1984 Dune.
When I looked the what was supposed to be the royal palace, it reminded me of the cheap way the videogame Doom painted its graphics - the operative word being cheap.
The robes in the new one are fine imo but all the western inspired costumes are ill fitted, too big, and look like they came from department stores. The uniforms of House Atreides need to be tailor made, well fitted like in the 1984 version or like the film The Charge of the Light Brigade. The costume designer really is weak in the new one.
It should make everyone wonder where this technological progress is heading - everything that is said to be good and superior is in fact..... quite the opposite? That includes the CGI
It goes over the top with the Harkonnen comedy villains, and Sting-o prancing about.
It definitely had possibilities, which it wasted.
But, I'd say it is still better and feels more "Duney" than the new version.
Still easily my favorite "Dune" film. Yes, we know its issues. But, this is the only "Dune" film that is actually passionate about the story it it telling.
