This movie kicks @ss !!!
I (still) don't understand why it "bombed" so badly. I never saw Saturday Night Fever (probably never will) but I have always ed Staying Alive. I think it's a great movie ~!~

If you watch Saturday Night Fever, then you'll understand why this bombed so badly. As far as I'm concerned these were two completely separate movies.

Exactly.

What the hell are you talking about! This film was a worldwide hit. It was not even close to be a financial bomb. Check into some facts next time, bro.

Why does he need to check his facts? It's been voted as the worst sequel in history and temporarily destroyed Travolta's career. That's about as bad as it gets. I watch this film sometimes, because it's fluffiness it makes me laugh.

reply

Simply put, you and neontrance are idiots for liking this movie.

It was a hideous movie, but I watch it for laughs anyway. The bad acting..The graceless acrobatics passed off as 'dancing'. It's a classic.

And I love that 80's motivational 'Far From Over' theme song too. Some others:
You're The Best Around - The Karate Kid
Eye Of The Tiger - Rocky 3
What A Feeling - Flash Dance

No, that's fame...Fame has a fifteen minute half-life. Infamy lasts a little longer.

I've seen both movies tons of times. They may be seperate movies, but this one is great entertainment and John Travolta dances amazingly in this movie and looks so good.

This move made over $126 million and cost $33 million to make, I think it did very well. Back in the early 80's, if a move made $66 million in the USA, that was a BIG HIT! This movie made more then its budget in the USA, and that is the main goal.

I liked the movie alot. The music, dancing, and acting was very good. It was different than Saturday Night Fever, but it was a different time. One thing that I don't like about Staying Alive, is that it didn't have Stephanie in it. I'm not saying that I wanted her to be Tony's girlfriend, but more as a friend who he turned to.

These spring chickens don't know what they are talking about. I was ten years old when this came out and we waited in line for hours to get tickets. Sold out consistently. That was back when people actually waited in-line for movies and they actually sold-out! Well, the movie was a smash and people loved it!

So now all the young ones think it killed his carreer and bombed? Man, how clueless they are.

I completely agree. Watching them dance during "Satan's Alley" is enough for me to LOVE the movie, but there are some incredibly good looking actors in this film - John Travolta (his body alone in this movie sends me into fits!), Finola Hughes (she's a goddess and plays the ultimate b*tch, among being a GREAT dancer), and Cynthia Rhodes (how much talent can someone have - incredible dancer, great singer!). LOVED THIS MOVIE & the MUSIC. Might be cheesey to some, but I still love it!

I have always loved this movie, but I really did NOT like Saturday Night Fever. THAT was a horrible movie. This movie, despite any cheesy 80's points anyone can make about it, actually has a point....you just have to pay attention to the character development in addition to the dancing to realize it.

I really enjoyed both Saturday Night Fever and Staying Alive. But they are very different kinds of movies. SNF is grittier and fascinating in terms of what was going on with pop culture in the 70s. The music and dancing is great. Staying Alive is cheesy, I know, but it's such a fun movie to watch! It's an entertaining movie.

I can see why people disliked this movie. Stallone took the Rocky II formula and plugged it into Tony Manero's life. I laugh a bit at the 80s cheesy music now, just as I laugh at some of Andrew Loyd Webber's musicals (see Starlight Express, and Jesus Christ Superstar). The storyline is good, even if the characters aren't fully developed.
I don't think this is the movie that killed Travolta's 80s career. I think Perfect, and some other bad role choices did that. It took till Pulp Fiction for Travolta to grow as an actor, just as it took Satan's Alley for Tony Manero to grow as a person.

2 diff movies but this one kicked butt. Great soundtrack, excellent movie. I have probably seen it over twenty times and watched it again on Foxtel last night.

I watched this and the only thing I liked was the way Travolota looked.
