Sosa no question. The money the South American drug lords brought in puts any mafia family to shame. At the height of power, Pablo Escobar was the third richest man in the world. And money means power, power to kill any mafia kingpin, including the Corleones.
True enough, although it's hard to know exactly how rich any of these mafiosi and drug kingpins actually are/were, since they're so often compelled to hide or launder their wealth so that nobody really knows how much they have.
It also appears that it would be far easier to play off the Latin American drug kingpins against each other, which is essentially what happened with the cartels in both Colombia and Mexico. Their infighting and internecine warfare was their big downfall, whereas the US-based Mob wasn't quite so brazen and out of control.
Plus, another difference is that Sosa's entire empire depended solely on a single commodity, whereas the Corleones were quite a bit more diversified and had other enterprises to fall back on. They controlled the unions, gambling, casinos in Vegas, other rackets - as well as being quite well politically connected with top US leaders. They also had powerful allies who might side with them if some upstart Latin American tyrant started raising a ruckus. Look what happened to Noriega. Even Escobar met a sorry fate where all the money in the world couldn't save him.
