Who would in

reply

Very, extremely difficult to say. I say Sosa to be honest.

reply

Corleone without a doubt, especially after Michael takes over.

Sosa and his connected-up empire actually seemed to represent what Vito was striving for, and what Michael and Hyman Roth hinted at in their future... a sympathetic government at their behest, and the financial clout to back up politicians of their choice. If the Corleone organization had made it this far, they would have been unstoppable. My impression, though, was that even Sosa, like Lopez and Tony, was merely temporary, a single chapter in an ongoing story.

By that time period(late 70's/early 80's), Caribbean, Central/South American Drug Cartels, had already started pushing Italian Mobsters out of their traditional strongholds along the East Coast.

Plus, the Italian Mob had been very much weakened by the FBI, and local law enforcement efforts to wipe them out.

Exactly…Thomas…by the late 70’s and .early 80’s ushered in a new era and the drug cartels…..Blow (Johnny Depp) is a great film deptcting that and the decline of the Italian Mob …

It depends upon which time period as the mafia was stronger is one while the drug trade was more powerful (yet more volatile) in another. Assuming they were both in the prime of their power, I would say the Corleones. They both had connections but the Corleones had it from a more powerful government that would have greatly aided them to eliminate a drug threat.

Sosa was educated but Michael was calculated enough to eliminate a series of rivals in a single clean sweep with pretty much no loss in manpower. Sosa's approach was coming in full force once war was declared but it would be at a cost of a lot of men. And the Corleones would likely know when the attack was coming and they would be entrenched at full strength; likely having law enforcement back them up as a flank. All in all, their attack force would be slaughtered and would leave Sosa greatly weakened.

Conversely, the Corleones would either let Sosa exhaust his resources (above) and then send n a group to elmiminate him.... or they would simply bribe the right person in exchange for a "favor".

I remember this question coming up on The Godfather board, and in some ways, it's pretty much a toss-up.

It's tough to imagine just how a war would play out, considering the the Corleones are based in the US and Sosa is based in Bolivia. Sosa would undoubtedly need to recruit US-based allies, and Corleone would have to bring in allies based in South America. The Colombians may want to topple Sosa, so Michael could make a deal with them.

Both would have equally powerful war chests and a lot of heavily armed muscle, with at least hundreds of men. But it would probably be more of a chess game than anything else.

One thing that Michael had on Sosa was his understanding of subtlety and subterfuge. Michael was certainly not afraid of reporters or bad publicity. What does he care? But Sosa was embarrassed, his pride was wounded, so his whole thing against the reporter seemed more personal and not a rational business decision. Michael wouldn't worry about the UN either. He got in front of a Senate committee and lied through his teeth, despite rumors, reputation, bad press - he managed to stay ahead of the game.

Sosa also had a temper, just like Michael's older brother Sonny had a temper. A hothead is easier to bring down. Michael knew this from experience.

Like with Sosa's angry phone call to Tony at the end, Sosa was definitely upset and losing it at that point. If it was Michael, he probably have played it differently. He would have said everything was alright and tried to get Tony to relax and not chew him out over the phone like that (especially over an international line). He would have wanted Tony to let down his guard while sending in the hit squad.

Well explained. Michael was always ice-cold, calculating SOB, very, very effective, unpredictable and almost invulnerable. He didnt get mad, he got even.He was very patient and waited his moment to strike. He waited for a long time before he killed Fredo

Michael Corleone is the most dangerous movie villain, he would destroy Sosa as easily as other families killed Sonny Corleone.

Corleone would but it would be a tough war and the Corleone family is not as rich as Sosa. The ensuing carnage would bring the Feds down hard on his organisation.
