Sandra Bernhard is terrific

Of course, De Niro and Lewis did great too, but Bernhard steals every scene she is in. She is eerily hilarious. I just wanted more, more, more of her.

Srsly? She was BEYOND annoying in this film... yeah I guess thats part of her character but still.... *beep* women!

The movie is one of those intelligent dark comedies that is more fascinating than it is funny, but I do agree that her later scenes were pretty hilarious. She and Lewis were the two bona fide comedians in the main cast, and while Lewis played it straight and did a wonderful job, she did a more overtly comedic performance. I suspect her later scenes were largely ad-libbed--like when she bursts into song, or when she says that line about having to hold the gun until Shavuos, which sounds like the sort of line Bernhard would have come up with. (Shavuos is one of the lesser-known Jewish holidays, and Bernhard comes from a very traditional Jewish background.)

By me, the Shavuos line was an in-joke between Sandra and Jerry - to have a dig at De Niro. Because how would twitchy Rupert-Bob know from when is Shavuos?

I am English and had never heard of her. I thought she was the best thing in the film.

She is so friggin' out-of-control but in a darkly hilarious way,  Looking at the movie, I can't understand why she is soooo obsessed with this man old enough to be her father, in the first place. Probably has something to do with her distant relationship with her parents, and Jerry 'Langford' has become someone for her to latch onto in her loneliness. Her performance was disturbing, complex, and really satirical. One of her best roles ever.

I normally can't stand Sandra Bernhard and generally find Jerry Lewis incredibly irritating, but both were perfect in this movie.
