Why did Buddy hate Arnie so much?

Was it ever explained in the book? Or was it just because Arnie was nerdy and Buddy was a jerk?

reply

Well, why does any kid/teen in schools hate other kids or target a particular person. I think Buddy targeted Arnie because it made Buddy forget about the loser he really was. Arnie had loving (but extremely overprotective) parents while Buddy had probably repeated a few grades and had a dismal home life.

reply

Also, Arnie was an easy target; notice he didn't go after anybody else like Dennis, although he cheered when Dennis got severely injured, that was all he could do because Dennis would have (and did) fought back.

reply

I take it you have never seen bullying or been bullied in school?

Christine is one rare kind of movies. Its a teenage life representation that doesn't make me sick when watching. I think its largely because of John Carpenter's directing. Thanks, John.

reply

I kind of thought it was just because he saw an easy target, but wondered if Arnie had also somehow (in Buddy's eyes) wronged Buddy in some way.

reply

Like EB says, bullies like to target the weak and vunerable.

reply

Law of the jungle. Buddy was tough, Arnie wasn't.

But Arnie sure showed that shitter, didn't he?

reply

Well, someone did!

reply

Buddy was upset that even though he was a dead ringer for 70s Travolta, he was pissed that the Travolta got cast in Welcome Back Kotter. So he took it out on Arnie, who survived a Great White Shark attack in Amity the previous year.

reply

Yes, this is the most likely explanation.

reply

Very Plausible!

reply

I never noticed the "Jaws" connection, lol. What character was the actor in Jaws?

reply

Keith Gordon (Arnie) is in Jaws 2 and is one of the kids that get stranded sailing when the shark started picking them off.

reply

Was he the one who had the boat with the inflatable sides?

reply

Yep - he was doing his pirate imitation and said something like, "let this be our finest hour" and then he over-inflated it and it popped.

reply

So he was a nerd there too!

reply

Oh, he was a stellar nerd... with those beat-ass late 70's Porkchop sideburns! On a side note: I met Keith Gordon at a ComicCon years back and he is really cool. Very down-to-earth and seemed like a true movie "fan" as someone not just working in the genre. He had a lot of cool stories about "Back to School" as well.

reply

Because Arnie was a nerd and made Buddy feel like he had Power over him
