People hated scientists because they thought there was a global conspiracy of scientists against the Visitors. In the beginning, 99.9% of Earth saw the Visitors as peaceful and welcomed them. The Visitors were going to help Earth in exchange for Earth helping them. They would share technology, ecological advancements and cures to many of diseases, such as Cancer. IF there was a conspiracy against the Visitors, it could potentially upset the "friendship" and jeopordize the sharing of many things. THAT is one of the reasons people hated scientists.
Then there is also the angle that human authority figures were also condemning some of the scientists, and lots of people jump on the "if-the-government-says-it's-evil, it-must-be-evil" bandwagon. That happens to this day... AND in America. This also crosses into the people that see it as their civic duty to help authority combat criminals by coming forward with info about them.
Add in the people that just look for a reason/excuse to hate another group of people...
See. It's not so far fetched.
