When the orphans run up to the front door they are screaming to get in and they all go quiet when Punjab answers the door. Did he say something I couldn't hear? Did he put a trance on them? Or did he scare them and if so how and why?

It's the 1930s and a group of orphan girls who arent familiar with the world see a 6'6 black dude with a turban on his head staring down at them, yep, they were definitely in awe, lol. I didn't get the feeling he put a 'trance' on them or anything, kids are usually in awe of people or things they've never seen before.
Also Rooster, a grown man, when he saw Punjab coming down from the helicopter (to save Annie) looked pretty freaked out and in awe of him as well, he stopped chasing Annie.
The Punjab scenes were my absolute favorites :-)
So they were smitten by him. Now I see.

shareI don't think they were racists....but they were unsure how to react to something they were unfamiliar with.
Certainly their experience w Miss Hannigan etc had already taught them that not all other white people are trustworthy and safe. So they were trying to figure out who was a 'friend'.
I am a 46 yr old man, and even I would react like that.
