Lilith's affair and other departing character assassinations

Have loved working my way through the show but it's had some odd, not particularly warm moments involving departing characters.

Carla's husband Eddie was the total antithesis of Nick. Yet apparently the actor was less than pleasant about Rhea Perlman and the character was subsequently turned into a bigamist and the actor booted out of the show without being seen again!

I'm not sure what happened with Cliff's girlfriend but one episode they were going to get married on their terms when the time was right, the next she turns up pregnant by another man and attempts to get Cliff to take on the kid!

Then Lilith - who's been a great double act couple with Frasier - announces she's having an affair and leaves him in an incredibly out of place non funny episode. Apparently the actress no longer wanted to be a regular so they seemingly stiffed her.

A bit weird from the writers...

Jay Thomas made some negative comments about Rhea Perelman on a radio show and he was booted off

Yeah, I had read that - I really wonder what was going on with Lilith though.

Just watching another episode now and it's really horrible. I don't know if they knew it was going to be the final season while making season 11 but it just seems such an unnecessary, horrible way to destroy the character - making her leave their kid as well!

If they were just making a few more episodes why no just say she was off doing a book tour of something. Just odd.

I really liked Eddie a lot and didn't like when they wrote him out of the show (killed by a Zamboni machine, if I remember correctly...LOL!).

I really loved Frasier and Lilith. Did you ever watch the spin-off series "Frasier?" I won't spoil it if you haven't...I enjoyed it a lot also, but it was a bit different compared to "Cheers." I think Lilith was the one true love of Frasier's life and I always thought her leaving Frasier like she did was really "out of character."

Yeah, Eddie got a raw deal - stupid death and turned into just as much a no good type as Nick. It was odd.

Funny thing is Frasier was pretty much introduced I suppose as a character for us to laugh at as he ultimately gets let down by his partner. But at least with Diane it was gentler and still a funny storyline - the out of the blue thing with Lilith just ruined her character and the great couple.

Haven't seen Frasier. Perhaps I'll give it a go after Cheers...

I really like Kelsey Grammer as an actor and am glad the writers kept Frasier on the show. He became one of my favorite characters...I love the episode with the karaoke machine--I think he's so great in that one! 😃

I agree with you regarding Frasier and Lilith. There was such a great build-up in getting those two together (two people who really belonged together, IMO). It was really disappointing, to break them up like that.

I would recommend "Frasier" to you...but Frasier is a bit different on "Frasier" than he was on ""Cheers." It's a different show in a lot of ways than "Cheers" was. I enjoyed "Frasier" through the first 7 seasons, but then I thought it wasn't quite the same afterward (still some good episodes here and there, but not like in the first 7 seasons). I'd be interested in reading your thoughts on "Frasier" after watching "Cheers."

Ha ha, yes that was a great episode - think I was near enough crying with laughter! That's the episode you'd show to showcase Frasier I think.

I can believe that Lillith would have an affair, and leave a husband if she felt like doing so. She has hormones like everyone else, and she knows enough psychobabble to justify absolutely any hurtful thing she does on the grounds of it being good for her mental health and personal growth.

And she and Frasier had a monumental level of self-absorption in common, IMHO they'd both be capable of cheating on or leaving the other for a hormonal surge. But Frasier would feel guiltier about it, and would spend a whole season yammering about his guilt without amending his behavior.

Fair points...but, if I remember correctly, she left Frederick also and I don't remember her being a "bad mother" before that (or even wanting to leave Frasier, for that matter).

They made her even worse on "Frasier," IMO. But I still think she was the one true love of Frasier's life...he never had the chemistry with anyone on "Frasier" like he did with Lilith.

I think Frasier and Lillith were kindred spirits... but that's not the same thing as being madly in love. They had too much in common, including self-absorption and over-education, to the point that they were largely out of touch with their feelings, instincts, and well, other people.

When people who are too similar get together, they can REALLY bring out each other's bad qualities, such as the mutual self-absorption of the Cranes, and if course that led to disaster. Come to think of it, I'm seeing a similar vibe in Harry and Meghan, but without the level of education...
