Do you think they should've killed Chief?

I heard that originally, Chief died when he fell of the bridge. That to me makes a lot more sense, and Disney should've kept it that way... It gives Copper more motivation to turn.

It would have made Copper look like less of a douche.

No one told Chiefs idiotic old ass to chase Todd onto a TRAIN track and then just SIT there while the train ran him off the edge.

"Because I knew you, I have been changed...for good."
" You flip flopping ass piece of bitch"

Then again, Tod was also an idiot in this scene (and in plenty of other scenes as well, as I noticed upon re-watching this movie). After getting a close-call reprieve with Copper leading Amos away from his hiding place, what does he do? Run in the EXACT DIRECTION that Copper (and Chief) had gone. Protip, kid: run AWAY from the hunter and his dogs, mmkay?

Eh? I was referring to the scene right before Chief gets hit by the train.

Oh yeah, most definitely. Tod had enough brains to jump out of the way, why couldn't Chief?

Todd didn't jump out of the train's path. He merely flattened himself against the tracks, and was able to do so because of his very small size. Chief was trapped on the bridge. He was too big to lay low to the tracks, and he couldn't run.

reply

I agree he should have died.
Originally I thought he was dead based on Copper's reaction until they showed him with a broken leg.

On a side note, Foxes are not known for having particularly strong bites, there's a reason they hunt rabbits and not deer. That bear would unlikely have even noticed Tod biting him.

reply

This is a couple of years late, but...

Tod was biting down on the bear's fur. I think the bear would notice if a fox was tearing out clumps of it's fur... that would hurt!

reply

Yes. Chief should've died.

Copper wanting revenge on Tod would've made a lot more sense, plus it would've been much more realistic. It was co-director Art Stevens who balked at the original scene, saying "Geez, we never killed a main character in a Disney film and we're not starting now!" Writer Vance Gerry said back, "But he gets hit in the kisser with a freight train!" Apparently, Wolfgang Reitherman's original pitch was quite different from the finished film.

Rewatching this old movie. Not one of Disney's best by any means, but it's an easy watch when you're bored. Yes, they definitely should have killed of Chief (sorry Chief!). Would have made more sense, given the nature of the incident (train, fall) and the way Copper and the hunter treat Chief afterwards. They don't really seem to care; the hunter just hates foxes, and Copper is a good dog and obeys his master.

reply

Yes and no for me. Yes because the scene is unrealistic and it would justify Copper's attitude towards Todd and no because perhaps it could make the finale anticlimactic.

This post contains a spoiler, however it seems anyone reading this far has already seen the film anyway.

Recently it occured to me why Chief HAD to live: at the end of the film, after Tod saves Copper from the bear and then washes upstream, Amos points his gun at Tod, but then Copper gets in the way. Amos tells Copper to move, but Copper refuses. After about a minute, Amos gives up and he and Copper go home, leaving Tod alive.

Now, suppose Chief had died. Since Amos blamed Tod for what happened, there's no way he'd leave without killing Tod. For that reason, Chief had to survive.

If I had made this movie:

Chief would be almost dead. Close to death... Amos Slade would have been heartbroken that his dog is practically dead, and beside himself with grief. He tries to keep him alive, but both he and Copper don't think Chief will make it.

That's when they both get angry, and then go after Tod. To avenge Chief, because he's about to die.

blah blah blah - Copper eventually puts himself between the shotgun and Tod, and Slade eventually letting them both go. Although if this was redone, their should be a bit more of a stand off between the two, where Slade tries to knock Copper aside with the butt of the gun, so Copper has to wrench the gun out of Slade's hands. i.e. Copper has to REALLY get the point into Slade about how much he cares for Tod

Then when the get back home, they notice Chief is actually getting better, and are grateful that they didn't kill Tod.

Then it ends the way it always has.
