Why did the knights shit themselves at the thought of duelling Gawain?

Gawain (Neeson) has accused the Queen of adultery with Llancelot.

At the duel with Gawain when Arthur is asking if there is anyone present who will fight Gawain, he looks left and right, and all of them shyly look down in turn.

Suggesting fear. Or is it because they agree with Gawain about the Queen's guilt?

reply

They all knew that Gawain’s accusations were indeed true.

reply

True. I found it odd that they then cheer loudly when Llancelot wins?

reply

Gawain was known to wipe out entire human trafficking rings without breaking a sweat. That would make anyone's sphincter tighten at thought of going hand to hand with a fella such as this

reply

They did believe that the person who was fighting for the side that was right would be favored by God in those duels.

reply

They knew what was really happening and most likely sided with Gawain. They did believe that anyone who was telling lies would lose these duels.
