To see this film as an adult is depressing !!!

I used to love this film, watching it time and time again on VHS as a child, I thought it was awesome !!!

I have just finished watching it on DVD as a grown adult, its terrible ! The sfx are worse than in jason and the argonauts from the 60's and as much of a Ray Harryhausen fan I am this does not look good for a film made 20 years later.

It's a shame the remake was equally as disappointing !

As a kid I loved the monsters, now I love it for Perseus.

actually I find the remake was faaar more depressing then the original. I do not agree with you, I think the original (for me, the ONLY) clash of the titans was just a great fun movie and who the heck cares about the special effects? its not bad, just deliberately old fashioned looking, which only adds to the charm and fun of the film.

Realism, Remakes and Unnecessary Sequels are ruining movies!

Seeing "inferior" visual effects in older movies doesn't bother me at all. The storytelling is still the same, just as if I were watching a stage production. I can still respect the amount of detail and the work put into it to make something look authentic.

Sorry to hear you were depressed... I still like this movie as much as I did the first time I saw it, but maybe that's because I was an adult the first time rather than a child... for me, this movie will always be a treat to watch... it's just one of those movies that becomes a cult classic as much because of the cheesiness of it as in spite of it.

I cannot believe this was Harry Hamlin's first starring role. It should have been his last.

I'm glad to say I thoroughly disagree with the O.P. This film still maintains its magic with me, and the score is especially beautiful. I love watching movies that return me to how I felt as a little kid, and Clash of the Titans succeeds admirably. Perhaps we have to put a little effort into casting aside the cynicism of adulthood and dig deep to find that magic and wonder that defines childhood.

I like it. I watched it after a gap of many years after seeing the remake, and still found it enjoyable.

I like it, too. According to TCM, Harryhausen chose to use the older stop-motion technology and spend the rest of his budget on big-name actors. I think that was a wise choice as actors like Maggie Smith do a really good job of selling the story and their characters. And Harry Hamlin is surprisingly good as the callow Perseus.

As for the FX, I think the stop-motion and miniatures bring a kind of solidity to them that is lacking in later techniques like CGI. Yes, you see the wires, but that's because there's actually something *there*. It was also nice to see them do research on Ancient Greek art and architecture for the set design.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, there is actually 'something there' as you say. it makes it more exciting than modern effects, which one knows are just done by computer. And i agree the actors are really good.

I loved this film as a kid and still love it today, it's just as good as Jason and the Argonauts & the Sinbad movies. It's 10x better then the remake.

Calling the movie crappy is unfair. It's like calling cassette tapes or VHS tapes crappy...of course they are! They are out of date compared to today's technology and unfair to judge them and this movie by today's standards

I absolutely love the original Clash of the Titans, so when I heard a remake was in the works, I was beyond excited. That excitement turned to loathing when I finally saw the finished product. The film-making styles of the distant past may seem "crappy" by today's standards (and to a new generation), but no amount of advancements in technology can make up for a lack of heart, soul, and story. The original COTT had all of these. The remake does not.

When judged according to the era in which they were made, there's no contest: older movies leave modern movies in the dust. The majority of modern movies are loud, obnoxious, and completely hollow to the core. Give me 70's or 80's movies for the rest of my life and I'd be perfectly happy. Nothing made today can compare to that time period in film.

By the way, I recently watched the original COTT, and it was as charming and beautiful as ever. It hasn't lost a shred of its magic.
