This Show Is Pure Gold!

I've watched nine episodes now and it's easily the best thing I've watched in a long time.

The characters are beautifully crafted - flawed, nuanced and realistic. It gives the show so much soul...

Really pleased to have given this a bash.

Yes, it is.

Honestly I must have been on the verge of tears at least three times already!

But it's not just that, it's the small details as well - things like how the characters just look at each other silently, e.g. some exchanges between Frank and Phil as Frank knows without even saying anything that Phil will know what he means on how to handle a situation...

It's just brilliant!

Agreed.I watched it nightly when it came out and about 40 yrs later bought the entire series to relive it. It has so many believable and untouched scenarios treated with deep humanity and sometimes even bittersweet humor. I wonder if real cops ever had to deal with Capt.Freedom and Pancho Villa (or was it Don Quixote) type characters.Excellent example of old, quality TV.

It's actually too deep...

I absolutely love it but it's just so thick, I'm struggling not to burst out in tears in front of the missus on multiple occasions!

I'd paused watching this since posting these comments as it was too much but I've just restarted.

What happens? I'm dealing with Frank putting his career in the line on principle so some busted up loyal cop gets his pension and then Captain Freedom gets shot in cross fire and dies in Mick's arms!

Incredible, moving show...

I used to watch HSB with my dad when it was first shown. Our favourite character was Renko - although they all played it superbly. Great writing, too.

I was probably too young to get into this show when it ran but if it ever came to my cable service I should take a look. I used to watch L.A. Law when it started but that started in 1986.

I was in a restaurant today and on the sound system they were playing a song that seemed familiar to me. The volume was relatively low so I had some difficulty hearing it but I think it might have been The Hill Street Blues theme.

Yeah, I was the same - Too little to really get or follow it. I think I may have said on another thread but my grandad used to have it on when we were staying over as kids. So I have a familiarity with the theme and strangely even recognised some of the characters, even although I don't really recall watching it!

But yeah, you should check it out if you get the chance. Here in the UK it's on the Channel 4 on demand service, which is free. I guess if you had a VPN you could watch it.
