Raging Bull arrived at the beginning of the '80s, but is it best of that decade? This list ranks it third behind Do the Right Thing and Ran. Where does it belong?
This is probably one of those rare cases where, for me, I can say that the outright best FILM of the decade is not even close to my favorite. For example, I think that Jaws is not only the best film of the 1970s, but also one of my personal favorites that I re-watch constantly. Raging Bull is an anomaly because although it jumpstarted the decade, virtually no other film in the 80s comes close to the cinematic-ness that is 'Raging Bull'. But 'Raging Bull' is not even close to my favorite film of that decade, or even on my short list. I just recognize it's greatness. I mean, some of my favorite films of the 80s include Back to the Future, The Untouchables, The Terminator, to name a few. How many people would dare compare these movies to a film like Raging Bull? Not many. But that doesn't detract me from thinking that those movies are in their own right great film experiences for me.
