I just watched this movie today for the first time in many years. I always liked it, but I think I liked it more this time around because I'm gotten older. Burt Lancaster gave probably the greatest performance of his career in this movie. So subtle. Susan Sarandon, in the first movie that gave her a chance to really showcase her talent, is also excellent in her role. Kate Reid was a hoot and, like the rest of the cast, gave a splendid performance.
I love how the film shows Atlantic City at at time when it was in transition. The film really captured an interesting little piece of Americana, and did it so effectively (and ironically) because of the European style of filming, and the fact that the director was not an American (which gave him the perspective of outsider looking in.....which gave a more telling viewpoint.)
A lovely film....this should have beaten the vastly inferior Chariots of Fire for the Best Picture Oscar. Lancaster should have won over Henry Fonda (who was given the Oscar for one of his lesser performances to make up for the times he had lost when he had deserved to win in the past.)
