Yeah, brilliant film.

Totally agree. A movie like this makes me want to go out and see all of Burt Lancaster's movies. The scene with him on the bus (don't be naughty!) is heartbreaking and really darkly funny at the same time.

What's the spanish for drunken bum?

This movie didn't do anything for me. I like burt lancaster and the screenplay was pretty good, but it just seemed kind of stupid. What did i miss?

I think it is briliant, the old time washed up wanabee gangster in a tired and faded resort, living on memories and the new reality of extreme violence amd drugs.

I love the bit where he shoots the gangster and is so pleased with himself 'did you see me?' He laughs, after a lifetime of dreamimg, he finally becmes the gangster, and he doesn't care if he gets caught, he made it.

A very poignant film with great performances, a masterpiece.

This french/canadian production is one of the best films by Monsieur Malle. The acting is top notch, the screenplay is nearly perfect, the visions of Atlantic City falling apart (in order to create a new shiny city) is priceless.
What else may I add? Those juicy lemons? *yummy*, Lou Pascal brand-new white suit?

Usually less is more. 'Atlantic City' is the perfect example.

Sorry...just watched last night. Awful! I get what they were going for, but the script, pacing, and acting (outside of Burt and Susan) were atrocious.

I just watched this movie today for the first time in many years. I always liked it, but I think I liked it more this time around because I'm gotten older. Burt Lancaster gave probably the greatest performance of his career in this movie. So subtle. Susan Sarandon, in the first movie that gave her a chance to really showcase her talent, is also excellent in her role. Kate Reid was a hoot and, like the rest of the cast, gave a splendid performance.

I love how the film shows Atlantic City at at time when it was in transition. The film really captured an interesting little piece of Americana, and did it so effectively (and ironically) because of the European style of filming, and the fact that the director was not an American (which gave him the perspective of outsider looking in.....which gave a more telling viewpoint.)

A lovely film....this should have beaten the vastly inferior Chariots of Fire for the Best Picture Oscar. Lancaster should have won over Henry Fonda (who was given the Oscar for one of his lesser performances to make up for the times he had lost when he had deserved to win in the past.)

Agree, one of the best movies ever made
