This version…

in my opinion it is the Best Vampire movie of all time! Although, it’s quite different from the book: the Vampire spoke. In the movie, the Vampire was silent! This made him more of a mystery, intriguing, and frightening! So, I hope the 2022 version doesn’t change that part of it!!!

This is without doubt the greatest ever vampire movie. I watched it when it was first shown and had trouble sleeping for weeks! And I wasn't a little kid!

Hooper insisted on a non-speaking/non-sexy vampire, b/c at the time of this release, Dracula(1979) and the remake of Nosferatu(1979) had these types of vampires, and Hooper thought the audience may want something else. Proved correct!

reply

Exactly!!!

reply

You thought Nosferatu was a sexy kind of vampire? Thats pretty funny. Did you find Mrs Fratelli sexy in The Goonies?

reply

Well, maybe #2. The original Dracula (1931) is #1 in my opinion.

reply

My problem with the original is that it ends so dang abruptly. Van Helsing says "I'll be right back I have something else to do." He walks away, and boom- it's over! I also thought that when he finally killed Dracula that it was anti climactic. The sun began to come up and Dracula ran off to his coffin, got in it, and got staked- that's it. So the ending of the 1931 version was anti-climactic for me. However, I am aware that the studio ran out of money, and that's why the movie ends so abruptly. I don't know if you know that , but they were shooting the exact same movie, at exactly the same time, but with a different cast, and in Spanish. So, that's why the studio ran out of money.

thanx for the trivia. I agree with you about Draculas ending. When Van Helsing says (at the end) that he must return to "finish the job", its too turn Draculas head 180 degrees so hes facing backwards, the true ritual to killing a vampire I think.

reply

Thanks for telling me that. I had no idea that that was the actual ritual for killing a vampire. I still think it's a great film, but the ending falls flat for me. To be honest when Van Helsing says "I'll be right back". I thought that he was going back to battle the "brides" of Dracula, but that didn't happen either. It's still a cool film in my book, but I did prefer the original Frankenstein over Dracula.

My favorite vampire films are;
1. Lifeforce (1985)... if it counts....not really a conventional vampire film.
2. Salem's Lot (1979)
3. The Lost Boys (1987)
4. Underworld (2003)
5. Let The Right One In (2008)
6. Dracula (1958)

So I'm in near agreement with you. This really was a fantastic mini-series. Tobe Hooper done a brilliant job. Kurt Barlows Nosferatu-inspired makeup is outstanding.

reply

Then you may enjoy Byzantium and Near Dark. The word “vampire” is never used in either film.

reply

Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't seen either of those films though Near Dark has been on me watchlist for well over a year now, I really need to get around to seeing it.

reply

Okay, I will definitely check those out as well. Thanks!

reply

Thanks for the list! I didn’t know “Let the Right One In” was a vampire movie. I love “The Lost Boys”!!!

reply

Let the Right One In (2008) is highly recommended and not to be confused with its later remake.

reply

Okay, thanks!

Wow, Lifeforce! I love Lifeforce- anything by Cannon is awesome in my book, but I always felt that they (the filmmakers) tried to cram too much into too short of a space. The movie should have been a bit longer, and perhaps, it was originally intended to be. I know that Menachem Globus had a tendency to cut his own movies into pieces. He would essentially ruin his own films, and then proudly declare "Now that's, a Cannon movie!"

Salem's Lot is (to me) the best vampire movie that I have ever seen. It has just the right amount of atmosphere, suspense, action, and horror. Although, I know some younger viewers would probably complain about its slow build.

The Lost Boys was also a great flick, and probably the best vampire flick of the 1980s.

I initially liked Underworld when I first saw it. I don't know how I'd feel about it today as I have grown increasingly tired of seeing 100 pound women kick the crap out of ten to twelve 200 pound mean all at the same time.

Dracula from 1958- Complete Awesomeness! Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee- enough said!

I don't know Let the Right One In as it came out at exact same time that I gave up on watching modern films.

reply

I remember loving it when it was on TV; I was 10. I just watched it for the first time since then, and... it was... pretty good... I guess.

I mean, it wasn't ~bad~. I guess.
