Barlow entering the house

I thought vampires could not enter a home without being invited according to the lore yet Barlow comes flying into the Petrie kitchen and is able to kill Mark's parents.

How is this possible? Is this something that Hooper ignored or goofed or was there some loophole in the vampire legend that enabled Barlow to enter uninvited?

reply

Could it possibly have been that Barlow was so all-consuming in his power that he himself did not need to rely on an invitation from the property's owner(s) to enter their personal dwellings the way his minions had to? Just a guess on my part.

It's just a guess on several people's part if you read the responses.

reply

Well then I suppose this guess is simply the way that I've always interpreted as being the primary reason for Barlow's ability to enter another's home without any sort of invitation required on the owner's part.

I've always interpreted it as a goof on King's part, which is what it is.

Look, even the book says that vampires cannot come in uninvited, and does not mention any exceptions to this for 'master' vampires. This notion of 'classes' of vampires is only presented by King in the DT series.

King is a very sloppy writer sometimes, and he goofed here. Why is that so hard for some folks to accept? I recognize this and I still enjoy reading his work.

I'm formally allenm Gary.

Television has a remarkable effect on people. They believe what they see and hear on this device instead of using their intellect and instincts. It's easier than going through the trouble of doing research and thinking,

Good to know, I'll place you on ignore just as I had done with your allenm account and that Gary person. Fans who live on the boards and act condescendingly to others for no reason don't deserve the time of day. This place is so much better without you.

1. So how do you feel about fans who randomly butt into conversations they're not even involved in just to beat their chest about ignoring their posts when nothing is being said to them in the first place? Does that bother you as well?

2. Should my and Gary's feelings actually be hurt such as yours is because you chose to give us this information?

Those are two interesting questions I think will reveal to you who you really have a problem with: yourself.

To be quite honest, I'm more amused than anything else.

reply

I'm actually flattered Gary. I never knew I meant this much to total complete strangers.

The devil is in the details.

Well if it was an actual goof on King's part then that's what it'll ultimately have to go down as being in both the book and TV series adaptation. I never read the actual book by the way.

And it wasn't hard for me to accept any sort of possible goof on King's part in writing the book. I was merely attempting to offer up a possible explanation as to why or how the Barlow character was allowed to enter the home uninvited. So if it turned out that I was totally off base with my guess then fine, I was totally off base. But again it's nothing that I had an actual problem with accepting in the first place.

We're cool. And I didn't mean to sound like I was ragging on you. Also, FWIW, both the TV adaptations have the same goof that King made.

reply

No worries here either. Thanks very much for your comment.

You would make an interesting familiar for Barlow Gary. He would complain about your dedication to the legend until he had to get rid of you because so many people got away.

Less powerful vampires have to be invited in first, but Barlow is ancient and powerful. He can pretty much do what he wants.

Yes, I am not really sure why some folks have such a hard time accepting that notion. I guess that since it was never spelled out in exacting detail, they can't just sit back and enjoy an old movie for what it is.

This was an interesting thread. BTW, I still believe that Barlow's entering the house uninvited was a goof on King's part as well as the scriptwriters for both mini-series.

Who the hell is going to ‘invite’ Barlow in anywhere? He’s a blue demon with giant fangs and claws who can’t even speak English and makes a noise like a power drill. He’s closer to an animal than a human.

It’s fairly clear that the ‘invitation’ rule applies to normal human vamps and Barlow operates on another level - he’s been around for eons, probably before humans existed, you think he was asking grunting Neanderthals to ‘invite’ him in to their holes in the ground??

Think, people. Stop trying to buttpick a great film 🤦🏻‍♂️
