What Other Works by Stephen King Have You Read or Seen?

For me, I'm about halfway through the Dark Tower series, and while I like them so far, I liked both 'Salem's Lot and The Stand a lot better. SL plays a part in the next book I'm going to read in the DT series, The Wolves of the Calla.

The Stand is my favorite SK book and film, with SL being a fairly close second.

It also rates a very honorable mention, and The Turtle from that book also plays a role in the DT series.

Anyone else?

IT was a terrific book, probably the only one better than Salem's Lot.

These are the following books by King that I've read:

- Salems' Lot
- Misery
- The Stand
- IT
- The Green Mile
- Pet Cemetery

So far Salems' Lot and The Stand are my favorites.

Just curious: have you seen the mini-series adaptation of The Stand?

The Stand is, I think, a very good film, and remarkably true to the book.

Stephen King wrote the script and was the executive producer.

I have seen it, and I loved it. It's one of the closer adaptions of a King book.

King had a cameo in it, too.

I've read all of SK's pre-van work (Except Danse Macabre) and have started almost all of his post-van books. Finishing the few from this latter category that I was able to get through was on pure willpower.

As for films, I believe I've seen all of them but the dollar babies as I don't attend film cons.

reply

pre-van and post-van meaning?

reply

pre-van and post-van meaning?
I believe this refers to the time King was hit by a car (or van?) and was badly injured.

Some say that the quality of his work really took a nose dive after the accident.

The Dark Tower series is good as well, although I found them to be somewhat over-rated. Right now, I am just about a quarter of the way through the final book of the series, and when I get done with it, I'll go back to my favorite SK book, The Stand. While the DT series is good storytelling, and I am happy to have read them at last, I just prefer the other books.

Rose Red, while it was far from being my favorite, was good. It reminded me of the classic Shirley Jackson story, The Haunting of Hill House. While I have not read the 1951 book by Ms. Jackson, I do have both the 1963 film The Haunting which from what I have heard, follows the book pretty well. I also have the remake with Liam Neeson. I also saw elements of the 1974 (?) British film, The Legend of Hell House in it as well as 1408.

All-in-all, King is a good writer, and is one that I really enjoy reading, even though my opinion of what his best work is differs from his. He feels that the Dark Tower series is his greatest work, and I think it is The Stand.

You, fine sir, are truly a man after my own heart. They are both my favorites as well.

Has anyone else read Duma Key? It is one of SK's latest stories, telling of a man named Fremantle, who loses an arm and becomes an artist.

How about some of his short stories? Jerusalem's Lot, for example? Some consider it to a prequel to 'Salem's Lot, although I have my doubts. One For The Road, on the other hand is definitely a sequel to 'Salem's Lot.

Graveyard Shift is very similar to HP Lovecraft's The Rats In The Walls, and JL is also similar to it as well, although less so.

-Children of the Corn (the entire series)

-Cat's Eye
-Creepshow
-Creepshow 2
-Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (he wrote the Cat From Hell story)

A suggestion if I may: get The Stand. IMO it is SK''s greatest work. You can find it at WalMart, or Amazon has it as well.

ABC TV first broadcast it in 1994, and it is six hours long, but it is well-worth the time that you spend watching it. Some people like it, and some detest it. Me? I loved it and it is easily one of my all-time favorite films.

Couldn't say what my absolute favorite King book is but my favorite King movie is The Shining (1980).
I just watched the 1980 The Shining, and I was rather underwhelmed by it. I actually liked the Mick Garris remake a bit more, although not by much. For some reason, neither film really appealed to me a great deal. Part of the reason may be that I don't really care for Jack Nicholson all that much and while I normally like Shelley Duvall and think that she is a terrific actress, Rebecca de Mornay was a much better Wendy.

reply

De Mornay and the guy who played Dick Hallorann were fine but otherwise I wasn't impressed with that version. It stuck closely to King's book but IMO that's just icing on a cow pie.

reply

All of them, with exception to his 2 newest. Doctor Sleep I'm finishing, Mr Mercedes is next.
Mind you, I have been reading King for over 30 years.

The Stand and Dark Tower series are my favs to date. IT was the one that scared me the most, but it was back when I was living alone for the first time ever. Probably wasn't the best time to read that. I did finish it a few months later.

Favorite adaptations for film are Stand by Me, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
