Has anyone seen this movie?
I'm thinking about getting this movie, but I want to know if it's better than "The Secret of Mamo." Is it?

shareYes a better film. Though Lupin's less of a colorful character - lacking the wit.
shareI saw both films in '81 at an anime/SF convention in Chicago. Both films are equally briliant. The main difference is that Lupin is more an outrageous lecher in MAMO while in CASTLE his nobler side is dominant (although his inner lecher does try to grope the Princess in a subtly funny scene).

buy this movie you wont regret it
shareYes, many people agree that Castle is the best Lupin anything. I prefer Mamo, but Castle is very good. The movie is actually very un-Lupin.
shareThis board needs more action.

But the Japanese voice is so much better...
As for the American dub, I wouldn't be sure. It depends on which version of the DVD you buy, there have been two that have been put out over the years.

I think COC is gorgeous. It may be different from the original Lupin III character, but it has this great sense for atmosphere that makes just about every Miyazaki flick so good. I consider this one of his best works.
shareIt is a neat film. For being made in the 70s, the animation and colours are top-notch (fun fact: some secondary characters and backdrops remind me of the "Heidi" animated series, in which Miyazaki worked as well). It is also action-packed and has some nice humour, which means it will apply even to those who find Miyazaki's later works too contemplative.
However, I was a bit disappointed. Not that the movie is bad, on the contrary, it is VERY GOOD, but I remembered the series being more zanier and frantic, so it felt a bit slow-moving at some stages. Probably it was just me, because everybody else on the board seem to feel different about it.
More trivia: although this is an early Miyazaki, and not much of his on-screen personality is noticeable here, there are some bits that will instantly sound familiar to his fans: Apart from the above-mentioned "Heidi" coincidences, notice the prominent role of the Count's gyroscope (Miyazaki seems to love vintage flying machines), and how often the action scenes defy all physichal rules, as it happens on the "Future Boy Conan" TV series as well.

Yo!
"Are you trying to say "capisce"? Because it hurts my ears the way you say it."
It was the very first Lupin anime I checked out. And the reason why I became a Lupin fan in the first place. This movie is perfect. It's my top favorite Lupin movie next to Dead or Alive and Farewell to Nostradamus.
What speical about it is it's Miyazaki's first Theatical Movie he directed. And it's very good for his first movie.
Comparing this to Mamo. This one's animation is more top-notch than Mamo had. It looks like it was made 5 years after Mamo was made. Plus the ending to this one is better than Mamo's ending.
So is it worth buying? You bet! Worth every penny.
Every Lupin fan should see Castle of Cagliostro.
It is a good movie but it isen't like the original Lupin from the Manga or the earlier series. It is one of the best Lupin movies made but it personally isen't my favorite of the animated theatrical films (The Secret of Mamo, The Castle of Cagliostro, Legend of the Gold of Babylon, Farewell to Nostradamus and Dead or Alive), my favorite is Mamo which was done 1 year before (Cagliostro was made to make more profit with the sucsess of Mamo).
I would reccomend buying it but if you want to see a good version either get the Japanese DVD or wait for the UK release that comes out in October (both are Region 2).

my favourite lupin movie is "island of assasins" also called "in memory of the walter p38" or something like that...castle of cagliostro is great but in that movie he doesn't show the real lupin attitude...you know, he acts more like a gentleman than in his other movies in which he is like a french james bond...yes "french" for those who don't know lupin the third is french, not japanesse...jigen is also not japanesse as he left the U.S and went to japan and changed his name to scape from the U.S mafia.
I saw Castle of Cagliostoro just now, and thought it was quite good (Im still in awe of Howls Moving Castle). Do you think tracking down the rest of the series is worth tracking down? I imagine its rather difficult in the UK, or at least, rather expensive.
shareIts very easy to get a hold of most of the Lupin stuff in the UK, just import from US. The only problem is its quite expensive (about £20 a DVD).

IMHO you should be looking for Miyazaki movies, not Lupin ones, simply because this movie is more indicative of his style than the actual character of Lupin. (As was stated elsewhere, ths movie is not characteristic of how Lupin usually acts.)
shareThis is a one of the best pieces of Japanese animation I have ever seen. I fell in love with the genre just because of this film. I saw the original english dub years ago, it was the best storyline ever. The only regret I have is that I don't have the original dub. It is significantly better in my opinion.
Hope that helps.
It's a classic, and is probably the most filmically beautiful Lupin film. The TV specials (like Island of Assassins) are NOT movies.
shareDid I hear right? Someone liked the Secret of Mamo over this movie??? I'm not going to bash on anyone's opinions but that's like saying you liked the Secret of Twilight Gemini movie...
I was under the impression that the Secret of Mamo is considered one of the worst Lupin movies in a long time...? I mean, the difference in votes is different by a wide margin, but Mamo got a 6.7 and Cagliostro has a 7.8...but of course who knows.
From what i've heard from anime critics (and I severely agree), First Contact is probably one of my favorites.
I like the Secret of Mamo, it feels closer to the original Manga than the Castle of Cagliostro. While the animation isn't as good as Cagliostro's it was amazing for the time (compare it to other animes from the same year) and was one of the first to use a new system (Anime-vision system, what an original name for the system) which meant better and brighter colours.
Also comparing Mamo to Secret of the Twilight Gemini is just stupid. Twilight Gemini has to be the worst Lupin special, it would of been better if they didn't cram as much fan service in there aswell as have major plot holes (like the quick sand part, how the hell did they get out?).
The major reason this has a higher rating than Mamo is that more people know about Cagliostro, mainly because Miyazaki directed the film.
First Contact is a great Lupin special, its in my top three (after Tokyo Crisis and Memory of the Walther P-38).

I wonder if this is a good time to tell everyone that I recieved the movie a couple of days after I made the first post...which was over 2 years ago.
