Is there anybody else who thinks that the scene with the undead Mina in the mines walking towards Van Helsing with open arms and chanting "Poppa, komme mit mir. Komme, poppa!" was horrifying? This scene scared the hell out of me and almost gave me nightmares.
"One day men will look back and say that I gave birth to the 20th century." -Jack the Ripper, "From Hell"
It depends on which version you saw. The original full color version scared me. I didn't like red leds on things in dark rooms for the longest time after this.
The current version on DVD wasn't any where near as scary. The color draining of this movie really ruined this scene.
I was 16 when I saw this at the theater, and that scene seriously creeped me out. I had trouble going to sleep for weeks after that, I kept expecting to see her at the foot of my bed, LOL.
Got the DVD today! Yes, this scene is by far one of the best scenes in any vampire movie. I'm with SkaterDave, the way Van Helsing cries is hearbreaking!
I saw this movie when I was 14, in the theatre, and this scene absolutely floored me. I was not prepared to see a creature like that. Most vampires I had seen to that point were the Lugosi/Lee variety. To see that "thing" shocked my 14 year old mind. It is still one of the most memorable movie experiences I can remember. I am sure alot of that was due to my age.
I was 6 in 1979 and it was absolutely frightening as a kid. Came to enjoy the scene later as an adult as it was both horrifying & sad at the same time.
That scene gave me the willies as well, and I'm generally not prone to the willies. This film builds its suspense very gradually so when a scene that that happens, it's a major shock.
I was about 10 when I saw this movie. That scene is THE most scary thing I've seen in any movie. At the time, and I'm not joking here, I literally crept into my parent room and slept under their bed for several weeks -then snuck out at the crack of dawn. I've seen the movie a couple of times since, but have never had the nerve to look at that scene. It haunted me for a very long time.
Although on later viewings as a more mature male, I found Langella's hairstyle and accent to be most offputting - really a bad idea by Badham, the movie is strikingly realistic, haunting and violent. Langella is a good Drac in some ways and I know the ladies liked him, but I wonder what would have been with a different actor. Regardless, there is a lot of brilliance to this movie and it could have been a masterpiece.
I could only imagine van Helsing's feelings when after he impales his now vampire daughter, a kind of recognition appears in her eyes, she whispers "Papa" and like a tired child, her head falls upon her father's shoulder. That made me teary, too.
I could be a morning person if morning happened at noon.
It was scary in the original prints where Mina's eyes glowed red. I saw it in a theatre in 1979 and it scared me! Two girls in the audience gave out little screams:) However now, with all the color drained away from the prints, the glowing red eyes look white and a lot of the impact was destroyed. Hopefully we'll see the original copy again someday. I'd love to get my hands on John Badham and explain to me how draining all the color out helps the movie!
