I ask this every now & then. I was this movie the first weekend of it's initial release at the Century Theatr in Oakland, CA with a buddy and yes we both were stoned on weed and acid at the time.

I was in college and went with a few buddies to a theater in Charlotte, NC to see it. The theater was completely sold out and we weren't able to sit together, and I ended up sitting on the floor in front of the screen. I HAD been stoned before going into the theater but the high was gone by the time the movie started. Nevertheless it was still the funniest movie I'd ever seen and the audience was screaming with laughter. There was also a smoky haze in the theater that wasn't fire. Those were the days.

I must say, if I had a 9-year-old son, I wouldn't show him "Up in Smoke"! I guess is was no big deal for me. I already knew what pot was because I knew so many teens and adults who smoked it. I knew it got you "stoned" and I knew it was illegal, and the cops often arrested people for having it. I didn't actually get stoned myself until I was 17!
Anyway, most of the jokes went over my head when I was nine.
My first time was at an old vaudeville house turned movie theater in NW Pa. The city was extremely influenced by the oil industry.Pennzoil and Quaker State were born here. I digress. It was a midnight showing. The mgr. made a six foot doobie out of paper mache and hung it in the foyer. This was 1978. I am glad I was the first generation to see this classic on the biggest indoor screen I've ever seen.

I bought the movie on dvd @ walmart, got it home. Not the 1st time i watched it, didn't have any, but many times since then, and have sometimes hidden something green in dvd case :-)

Fall 1979 Las Vegas drive in. McDonalds had 10 cent hamburgers, $5 got 3 of us 50 burgers. So yeah, I was pretty gone.

shareMy best friend and I worked for a locally owned group (2 walk-ins and 1 drive-in) of movie theaters in a small town in Nebraska. The movie was about to come out and after we put up the posters in front of the theater we discovered a 4' Christmas tree up in the storage room and made a HUGE JOINT out of it and wrapped it thightly in brown shipping wrapper.
We wrote "Comming Soon: "Cheech and Chong's UP IN SMOKE" on it and walked up and down in front of the place. We walked around when we had time for about two weeks before the show promoting it with this thing even when it was freakin' cold outside.
We both had long hair and looked like (and were) stoners and really promoted the upcoming movie. The movie ran for over a month at that theater then moved to the drive in with sold out crowds almost every night.
We used to sit in the projection booth and every other night (with the sound down) we would do the parts. One night I would be Cheech and he would be Chong. The next night we would switch parts. Life couldn't be much better than that.
A good portion of the time we managed to get into the "vibe" if you know what I mean!!!
One of the best movies ever. It's kind of funny to know now that while Cheech and Chong were stone cold sober while they filmed it.... We were NOT while showing it!!! LOL

Me & my buddy James walked around the streets of West New York, NJ, got good n stoned & then went to the Mayfair Theater to see Up In Smoke. I don't know exactly what year of the 1970's this was, but The Mayfair never got first run movies, so it was probably a year after it was released. The Mayfair is gone now & come to think of it, so is James. RIP my weed puffing friend.

I honestly don't remember, but given that I was only 2 when it first came out, I'm guessing it was on video... probably in high school with friends, and most definitely while high as a kite. ;-)

I know I didn't see it in the theater. My hometown was far too uncool to screen a comedy "promoting" "drug" use.
My best guess is that I probably saw it at home on HBO in the early 80's when I was in my late teens/early twenties. HBO was pretty cool back in the day.
