Is the humour dated or still very consistent in this movie?
I only saw Tommy Chong as Leo in That 70's show and I hear his character is quite similar in this movie :)

I've seen this so many times--much as twice in one day--I can read almost every line along with the actors. I don't find it dated, any more than I am, having lived (smoked) through the 70s. This film holds up much better than the later ones because it is not a series of bits but an actual story. Lou Adler's soundtrack is superior as well. So are the supporting characters.
If nothing else, I like it because Ronald Reagan hated it.

When my son discovered the VHS tape hanging around, him and his teenage friends at the time didn't think it was dated.
A lot of the humor is dated, but many of the drug jokes hold up -- if you've ever used drugs. Like there's a scene in which Chong tries to smoke a tiny roach and ends up swallowing it after it's lit. I laughed. I've done that!

shareI don't get what posters are meaning about the humor being dated. It is a silly, bright toned comedy and I think one of a kind for it's time, in that it was a stoner comedy with two very likable leads. They are easy going guys who get stoned a lot and always tend to have providence on their side, while stupid cops are on their tail. I would say that it may have set a trend and inspiration for other comedies that have stoner characters. Can't think of any right now, except for other C&C movies and 'Pineapple Express-08', that were full on about getting stoned and even the odd snort. Perhaps C&C had the corner of the market on this and nothing else could come that close.
As it stands, UP IN SMOKE-78' is C&C best and funniest film and one who's humor is the most consistent. It is also one of my favorite go to comedies. It is also their most endearing. C&C's NEXT MOVIE-80' & NICE DREAMS-81', didn't appear to have the same magic or flow and went a bit of the rails at times with some strange\bizarre sequences. UP IN SMOKE, was more about character and a friendship bond, that was quite sweet.
THINGS ARE TOUGH ALL OVER-82', is also very funny in parts and tends to get forgotten. While very low on the drug quotient and possibly even sillier than SMOKE, it also has a humor consistency to it's flow. Perhaps because Chong didn't direct either of these.

Yes, and Keach's goons piss him off too....."You are a very stupid, stupid man". One by one, he then regulates them to the back seat of the car, like little children. 😄

I just saw it for the first time and I thought it was hilarious. I guess idiotic stoner duo misadventures are timeless to me.
shareI don't think it is dated at all, i was watching it in the 90's and the 2000s - 2010 and still would laugh just as my mates did. If you are a toker and you are toking while watching this film you will laugh just as much as i did when i first watched it in 1996.
It is a classic for the dope smokers and always will be!

If you like Leo, and That 70s Show in general, you will probably enjoy this movie.
I like to think his character in this movie and Leo are the same person.
