Anyone else wish Rankin/Bass had made this instead?

I honestly find it hard to watch this film without constantly wishing that Rankin/Bass were doing the animation, voice talent and coming up with those catchy as hell songs for this film. I know Ralph Bakshi is an animation giant and I respect him for what he means to animation history but I never got into this film as much as the others as a kid. I really don't care for the solarizing technique used for a lot of the animation. Anyone else have that problem?

Not really. I didn't care too much for their take on The Hobbit. That being said, I did not see their version of Return of the King.

I would have given the movie a chance if Rankin/Bass made it. I always love their Christmas classics.

No. I prefer this film to the Rankin/Bass Return of the King. I enjoyed their Hobbit (with some reservations), but The Return of the King they did was too truncated, too rushed, too aimless, and just didn't work very well. That minstrel's song off the top seems like filler, the other songs are largely forgettable if not memorable for the wrong reasons (Where there's a whip...). It struck me as repetitive, too. The Hobbit survived a bit of boiling down since it's a more straight-forward story, but with RotK it required finesse and detail.

Also, having Orson Bean voice Frodo made it a little odd for me. I watched The Hobbit cartoon a few times, so having "Bilbo" voicing Frodo took some getting used to.
