Which FM station were you listening to in the 70's?

In Boston the coolest FM station was WBCN.
The late 70's was it's golden era. Billy West (The voice for Ren & Stimpy, etc) did voices and promos. Areosmith, shared airtime with Gil Scott-Heron, Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers and the Beatles
There was the morning game show-Mishegas, The lunch-time song where popular songs of the time had their lyrics replaced with lunch-time themes. "Here comes the Chung-King" "Slattered" Electric Barbecue" etc. And the 5:00 Comedy.
The DJs were entertaining without dumbing down the content and great bands were coming out of Boston at the time.
WBCN wasn't the only station, in the early-mid 70's there was also WBZ-FM with Captain Ken Shelton who would scratch a newly released commercial song on the air and name it the WBZ-FM Bummer Record of the week!

WCBS-FM 101.1 New York was THE real hit station in the Big Apple.

In the late 70's I listened to 95.5 WPLJ. They played healthy mix of all kinds of rock. 102.7 WNEW was OK too. 102.3 WBAB out of Babylon, Long Island has always been the absolute best rock station. They played EVERYTHING rock oriented, and still do. They play B-sides, non-hits, listener requests, arena rock, heavy metal, classic rock, EVERYTHING! Unfortunately, they've always suffered from an extremely poor signal.

New York used to have many rock and rock oriented stations.
95.5 PLJ is now adult top 40
102.7 NEW now Caucasian top 40
103.5 WAPP is now KTU urban top 40
92.7 LIR was Punk Rock, college rock is now Spanish
92.3 was hard rock now dance top 40.

In NY we have two rock stations left. 104.3 Q-Rock is just pretty much boring classic rock. They've been playing the same couple dozen songs for years now. Pretty much all Beatles all the time. And WBAB survives out on Long Island. Still a great old fashioned radio station, huge variety, great shows. But they never boosted their signal. Unless you're parked literally in front of the station, it's going to come in all broken up.

Baco in 1983, I received 50 blank 8-track tapes that had a lot of songs recorded off the radio and there were a few spots where the DJ would talk. I guess these could be called :sound checks" or something. I wish I had those tapes so I could digitize them. :(

The 4 radio stations that were hot in the San Fransico Bay Area in the late 70s:

92.3 KSJO (I believe they have the same callsign, but a different format)

94.5 KSAN (KSAN is now at 107.7 which used to be KSOL, a soul music/disco station at the time. KSAN plays hard classic rock)

97.3 KRQR (It's now called Alice and the callsign KRQR is now active in Sacramento).

98.5 KOME (98.5 is now KUFX (K-Fox) which has a classic rock format. I just checked Wikipedia and found out as of this post the callsign KOME is not being used)

There you go. More history of Bay Area radio than you wanted.

PLJ in NyC was the greatest station of alltime, with the best DJs. Many work on Sirius now. Dave Herman was actually on NEW, MMR's sister station in Philly. YSP was a sister of PLJ. Both Philly stations were good, but not as great as PLJ in it's day, before they went top 40

WABB was the FM rock station!
Remember Slack Time? If I remember that is when they would play a whole album.
And King Biscuit Flower Hour Concerts?
and when they would have high school apprentice DJ's do a set of a certain artists?
So many albums I bought because of this station.
So many artists I collect to this day;
Joan Armatrading
Bonnie Raitt - BEFORE she was famous,
Steely Dan, (who needs hit singles?)
RUSH (Of Course!)
Pink Floyd (another of course)
Ambrosia
I could be here all day.

And local, regional stuff like Louisiana's Leroux
Elvin Bishop
Wet Willie
Backwater

Ephemeron.
