He’s one of the reasons this show worked out as well as it did. He had such a likable quality to him, both the character & the man but of course it’s known that he got overshadowed by the rest of the cast which is understandable. But again Gary had that everyman guy you’d want to hang with type of vibe, I really have nothing bad to say about him. He reminds me of a Gary Cole type of actor, they “sort of” resemble each other I think. He looks like he’d probably be the nicest dude you could meet, if you met him in person.

Good choice for a lead, but that’s the thing, he never had to, to me this show didn’t have a lead as everyone else held their own in his/her each own way so you can never call a show like “WKRP” just about one particular person.

It was an "ensemble" show, and a very good one at that.

His character really didn't have anything that stood out. Johnny always seemed out of it. Herb was a sleaze and les was annoying. Andy was just "Andy."

Ever ensemble piece about a strange place needs an "entry character", a normal person among the weirdos, someone the audience likes and can identify with. Sandy did a fine job, he was the normal person, the outsider who came in at the beginning of the show, and yeah, he was monumentally likable.

He was also quite attractive, in a way that wasn't ostentatious.

You're right Otter. There has to be a straight man with an eccentric group like that. He's the audience.
