Is it just me, or is Suspiria getting bashed a lot these days???

I mean, don't get me wrong! It's not a masterpiece in any way! I like Phenomena, Tenebre and Deep Red more, but what's with all the hipsters coming here to say that it's overrated!? What!? Almost NOBODY talks about Suspiria anymore! Even in horror circles I never notice anyone talking about a single Giallo film!! I mean, let me rephrase that: "Suspiria is UNDERRATED". That's what it is, and you know it true horror fans!...

Because its gotten a lot of praise over the years, so people who think they're above it all come on and bash it.

Can't stop the signal.

I dont know, I just discovered this movie and I liked it a lot. It'd the rest of Argento's filmography that I found disappointing, Suspiria is by far my favorite among the ones I watched. Screw the hipsters, according to them even The Exorcist is "overrated". Idiots

look at the formulatic crap that they covet. 

Suspiria had a cameo on American Horror Story last night. It was playing on a tv in one of the hotel rooms. (Pat's death scene)

I saw Suspiria almost 10 years ago, and Ive watched it many times since. Argento's movies are excellent.

Everything that gets praise gets bashed and most of the time when people criticize some work it feels like they're thinking "Wow, I didn't like this movie, therefore it doesn't deserve to be called a classic and is in fact overrated trash, everyone is brainwashed and I'm the only voice of reason."

It's like this thing called subjectivity doesn't exist for some people.

For some reason, it seems that gialli have always been underrated and overlooked for their massive contribution to the horror genre on the whole. Without the giallo, the horror film as we know it would be a different beast entirely. :) The Italians--and not just Argento, though he is the primary proponent and visual stylist--have such an influence on horror that it's criminal to not give that credit where it's due.

I think that sadly, it's a matter of people not knowing their history. What I find really odd are the sheer number of people who could tell you every plot twist and turn that happened in the Saw films--which owe an enormous debt to the giallo, both in style and substance--but they have absolutely no understanding of the films that came before. At least the directors are smart enough to know who their influences are, but most audiences simply don't give a *beep* which I find super depressing.

As an aside, I saw that you listed Tenebrae and Deep Red as gialli you like, both of which I love. Do you have any other favorites? Pupi Avati's House of the Laughing Windows and Martino's The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh are two movies I'd take to a desert island!

Mostly the younger generation bashing older classics. They are rude and arrogant.

They are rude and arrogant.

Like this post Mr. Oldie who bashed movies which were considered classics when they first came out.

They are rude and arrogant, and they're also convinced that they're 'right' somehow when it comes to art, which is a totally subjective thing. You can't be right or wrong about art.

We can all discuss themes and motifs and symbols, but none of us can definitively state that we're right. People who do so, do so at the risk of coming across very foolish.

You know that snickz does the same thing? All he does around the boards is bash young people.

Someone criticizes a movie, it must be someone young.

How is that valid criticism?

It makes him look like condesending generalizing jerk.

I grew up enjoying films like Suspieria, evil dead, the thing, etc so I guess I just like this as I see it's way better then the modern crap they make.

For some reason lots of people think it makes them seem special and unique to bash horror classics many people seem to like. I think it's kind of like how some people go to see horror movies at a theater just to laugh the whole time and try to showcase how tough and cool they are. And some people are so used to watching so many newer movies that they just can't make the adjustment to the style of older films. It's one of my favorite movies and nothing anyone says will change that.
