THIS was the movie I had heard such great things about??

Christ, I gave up after half an hour. This movie was a colossal bore. Horrible, listless acting, wretched dialogue, weak plot.... If the first 12 minutes are the most terrifying, I could not imagine the crap I had coming in the rest of the film. It was not interesting, terrifying, mysterious or engaging in the least. Keep in mind, I love good, old-school horror & appreciate a slow-burn type of movie like House of the Devil (THAT is a masterpiece), but this movie seemed like half-assed student film that did not deserve my viewing.

Negatives:

Poor acting/translation/dubbing for the most part by most of the actors, overuse of the music in places where it didnt seem to be needed, directors choice but less could have been more IMO

Positives:

Reasonable storyline, great sets used (reminded me of clockwork orange in places), interesting death sequences and good use of colour.

Overall for me 6.5/10

The goddamned music keeps drowning out the dialogue...which on second thought might have actually been a good thing

I think you are the perfect example of the average American movie goer these days (especially if you prefer Rob Zombie's version of Halloween)....music video style editing and gore every second of the movie (or CGI bombardment every second). No one has time for character or story development, or to simply enjoy the cinematography (which I love in Suspiria)...we need gore gore and more gore NOW! Rob Zombie does some pretty creepy stuff, too bad he rarely spends time to actually develop (or at least gives the audience some background) of his truly demented characters. The whole movie is just a constant increase in body count..

im american and i hate rob zombie's halloween. i LOVE suspiria. its my favorite horror movie. that and the original black christmas. rob zombie's only good movies are house of 1000 corpses and expecially the devil's rejects. that one is easily his best. suspiria truly scared me. i dont know why. im an adult. i was watching it late at night and i had heard it was scary and it just hit me really hard. i was disturbed watching it. i noticed the score really increased the tension and creepiness. i found it dificult to be alone in my apartment for several weeks after. im not joking. i havent had that reaction since i was a kid. i found the death scenes to be very disturbing and scary. i immediately went out and bought the DVD and was even scared when i bought it ... no joke! this movie really did a number on my head.

this movie is considered a classic and has been for the past 40 years. its widely admired. yet you dont think so. so millions of people are WRONG and YOURE RIGHT?? do you not see the error in that? youre break is over. get back on the walmart cash register

Wow you kind of a douche, there are billions of people on the planet so yeah the opinions of a few million asswipes dont matter.

Well, I liked it. I can see how some might find it overrated though.

reply

Yes, I love the film as well but I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone. In addition to having an interesting story, it is told in such a stylish way with the music, sets, and in general an unconventional format. I think the people who dislike the film would like it if it was just your typical straightforward horror film. But because it was so bizarre it isn't able to be appreciated by everyone. Kind of like Exorcist II: The Heretic. I think it's a beautiful, fun, atmospheric classic with gorgeous cinematography, scenery, colors, and music myself.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!

You like those old-school classics like 2009's House of the Devil?
Brother, you just ain't a horror guy. Stick to the new stuff and leave us horror fanatics be. Certain techniques become dated, bad ADR that was passible in the 70s, etc., but we love the classics 'cause they had the guts to go where other movies/directors wouldn't even by today's standards. Plus they paved the way for everything else that are enjoyed today.

I'm sure Ty West knows that, or at least pretends to with his hipster buddies.

I don't think Suspiria is all that either but you don't do yourself any favors in the credibility department by referring to House of the Devil as a "masterpiece." At least Suspiria has credibility for its artistry, while HOTD doesn't even have that to fall back on.

The same check point - half an hour sharp. Then I skipped some parts, looking at least for Jessica Harper tits - nothing. What a waste of time. Also I might add terrible and annoying sound design. Yes, high pitch sound is annoying rather creepy, scary, etc.

I think the movie is just outdated.

I felt the same way watching "The Matrix". I never saw that film in 1999 and I thought it was atrocious 15 years later (awful acting, dated and cheesy effects, a lame script, mediocre cinematography, etc.). Keanu Reeves should have shown more skin since he is such a terrible actor. What a waste of film!

reply

In 2017 you should watch sequels, they are better.

This film is not for everyone. Italian horror has that effect. I don't much like this film either. The sets, music and direction are great but the acting, script and dubbing are terrible. Aside from the first kill, the deaths are nothing special. The last 10 mins or so are good but overall this film is a big shrug of the shoulders. I would like to see Deep Red and Tenebre to roun out the trilogy but if this film is pretty much unanimously Argento's best, I don't have high hopes. To each his own.

reply

Just not my cup of tea. This movie is easily could be "guilty pleasure". To each its own.

But you know, I recall the same year has been released Cronenberg's "Shivers" and its really good.

upd. Nevermind, I gave them too 2/10 score.

reply

"but the acting, script and dubbing are terrible."

I disagree. The performances and dubbing were fine. I have watched A LOT of dubbed films over the years and Suspiria's was actually pretty good. Argento was never a really strong writer, but the script in this film wasn't bad (he wrote it was child characters in mind).

reply

Tenebre is much better. This one was a turd.

reply

"Tenebre" is vastly inferior to "Suspiria" (the latter has actually dated MUCH better and it is 5 years older).

reply

No thanks.

I struggled a bit to enjoy this movie but I think it had more to do with the horrendous quality of the DVD Netflix has in stock. I'm pretty sure it was literally ripped directly from a worn-out VHS tape,

This is definitely a film which should be watched on Bluray quality.
