Do we agree that this is the weakest of the original trilogy?

probably because GL directed it and the other two were directed by others. It also has a british feel to it while the two others have a more of a straight american feel to them. Who's with me?

Most insane take ever. STAR WARS is either best or second-best for the following reasons:

1) it's actually a standalone movie - you don't need to know any of the "lore" to enjoy it
2) it's the most technically impressive film that there was at the time it was made, surpassing special effects achievements that had been set by the likes of War of the Worlds, Forbidden World, 2001, and Silent Running.
3) it has a very interesting setup and story; the basics are pretty much a remake of Hidden Fortress but Lucas paid Kurosawa homage and brought it to a mainstream audience
4) the characters are all at their most fresh here; Solo is a loveable rogue, Chewy as the hothead, Luke as the fish out of water, Obiwan as the wise teacher... it's a great ensemble and their performances are all top notch.
5) just the right balance of talking and action for the uninitiated. EMPIRE is a better movie in my opinion, but must slower and talkier so a little harder of a sell to a wider audience.
6) groundbreaking musical score - I think it really captures how "big" and "cool" the spaceships are in a way that got diluted as the series went on. I love the Dah-Dah-da-DAH! Whenever we see a star destroyer roar past the screen. They kinda got made smaller later once we bring in Super Star Destroyers
7) I like Vader as NOT being the main villain, but like a top henchman. He's more threatening and cool that way. I hate that the prequels made him the focus of everything, and even that the sequels made him Luke's father and eventually into a total wussy in ROTJ.

I think that's doing Lucas a disservice. It's nowhere near a remake of that film.

I love the in-joke when Darth Vader starts choking the general right as he's saying the words "Hidden Fortress". I think it's pretty obvious what Lucas's main inspiration was for the story as he hasn't even hidden it.

Weakest ? It's the best, by far.

Nope

well , so far , no one

you just need 200IQ to be with me.

reply

Ah fair enough . I dont think I'm at 200 so could you help me out - which is the strongest movie in the series? I'll put it on my to-do list .

reply

Ofc Empire Strikes Back and then Return of the Jedi, the rest of the movies and tv shows u can put in a trash.

edit: I meant ESB>ROTJ>ANH>>the rest

reply

I think we should wait for season 2 of Obi Wan before we rush to judgement here

i lost track of how many star wars shows there are. are we upto 7? I saw the first season of the Mandalorian it was "mid" and halfway through s2 i turned it off. Im done.

reply

Its the weakest only because it has a scene in it where droids are discriminated against from walking into a bar

reply

Disagree..

I actually think it's the best. I know ESB is really good too and has one of the best movie scenes ever when Vader tells Luke who he is and it dives deeper into Jedi training but SW has more mystery and intrigue to it and a fabulous ending. But it's so close between the two, on any given day, either one could be considered the best.

I do not agree, with all due respect.

I'm probably the only other person in the world who thinks it's the weakest of the original trilogy. But I have no idea what the OP's reasons even mean.
