I didn't need the film to go into detail there; I assume Tattooine is so arid that moisture has to be cultivated. Maybe it's seasonal. Like, maybe they can gather moisture for x months and store it up for the "dry season" or something?

Owen mentions the harvest when Luke ask to join the Academy earlier than originally planned. I would take that to mean that it is seasonal.

I think it's just "space farming" as far as Lucas and the script is concerned. But my guess is that there is a really, really super-dry time of the year on Tattooine and they need to draw moisture from anywhere they can get it.

The whole PREMISE of Tatooine is stupid: if space travel to more hospitable inhabited worlds is possible for the cost of regular transport, then why would people wish to remain on that damned planet?

It's a very poor planet, reminds me of some African, India or Latin American countries... you can relocate to Western Europe or the USA, but at the same time you cannot... I guess that's the reality of a lot of people living in Tatooine... some of them own businesses, others slaves, others are just living in misery... when Luke comes back in ROTJ I believe they mention that he didn't miss a lot of things about his planet.

Yeah. That's the way of things, enriquesingh. You live where you live and you don't go away no matter how bad things get cause you just don't have the money. I live in Illinois and have worked for a Kroger store there for 12 years. The State's debt has made it so that a lot of citizens in my town and other towns in my region of Southern Illinois have had to raise their property taxes and sales taxes to pay for our schools. Because the state's debt prevents schools from getting the money from the state they need. But the fact is if I move to a Kroger in another state I will lose my seniority and go back to working 12-16 hours a week instead of 40 hours.

Similar situation to Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru. They are stuck where they are because they have no family except for Anakin/Darth Vader and therefore they can't go to a better place cause they just don't have the money.

Nah, I don't buy it. Luke sold his speeder to get off the planet. Owen and Beru certainly could have arranged transport.

Especially considering Luke had to arrange a more expensive smuggler to avoid Imperial entanglements.

There's no logical reason they couldn't have gone to a more inhabited planet with a vibrant ecosystem and find work. The reasons they stay are unknown, but it's not that "they just don't have the money."

I mean, for all we know Luke might have bought that speeder himself with money he saved from his Uncle. He does after all mention when they are talking about how to destroy the death star mention that he bought it just so he could go around killing rats that lived nearby. Also if I remember right the price of the speeder was not nearly enough to pay Han Solo for transporting them to Alderan and Obi Wan had to get him to take them by saying they could pay him 15,000 when they arrived there.

I forgot about the thousands upon thousands of slaves owned by the Hutts. Now it makes sense: Tatooine is ideal for the habitat of the Hutts, but they would never get anyone humanoid to work for them voluntarily for a wage in such a harsh environment, so they started the whole slave sideline for their own benefit, and Anakin and his mother were two of them.

I've never believed all them silly planets that are all one ecosystem could actually be habitable because a great number of conditions are necessary for air to breath, ozone to protect the planet, and magnetic poles to bombard solar rays and all that sort of thing. If your planet is all desert or all ice or all lava and what have you, those conditions simply couldn't exist and support life.

I'd assume moisture farms harvest liters of water which would be a precious resource on the world, sold to any and all. Further more, the more visitors you had to the planet sweating and pissing and breathing all over the place the better. It being a hive for villainy and corruption was probably great for business.

It's important to harvest moisture for both your happiness and the soil's. If the soil is not moist, it will not appreciate it when you attempt to plant something in it. Under such circumstances, chances are new life will not form.
