shareThe Alliance was desperate to get anybody they can, especially someone who can fly. Some farm boy from Tatooine who has never even flown in space, let alone been in battle, can just walk in and be sent on a critically important and dangerous mission.
The more I'm thinking about it, Porkins was much more of an accomplished pilot than Luke was at that point. Porkins had probably been in the Battle of Scariff.
The rebels weren't in a position to be picky, were they! And I doubt that the Rebels had any basic training, if you showed up and claimed to be able to fly, they'd give you a ship serviced by someone who claimed to be a mechanic.
But now I'm wondering - what DID the imperial fleet do to pilots who passed basic training and qualified as pilots and then for combat training... and who got fat?
Just a bit of trivia, Porkins is played by the actor who later played Lieutenant Egghart on Tim Burton's Batman.

shareI know. That was the point I was making. Even though I never recognized the fat cop from Batman( 1989) or remembered the characters name i immediately made the connection, remembering the character who most fit the "Porkins" description when it was mentioned that he was in the film.

He would have breezed through basic training just as quickly as he would an all you can eat Chinese buffet and had all his boxes ticket off by a superior looking the other way to ensure their diversity quota was met.
For those unclear on the origin of the name, it's clearly a reference to the 1981 documentary film of a Florida high school: Porky's.
