did Dreyfuss deserve to win the Best Actor Oscar for this film?

After all, one of the four other contenders he bested was Richard Burton, the legendary Welsh actor who was nominated seven times, never won, and (unlike Peter O'Toole, who later received an Honorary Oscar), went to his grave empty-handed.

Seriously, a young American Richard triumphing over a veteran British Richard??

No! I didn't like the movie but I'll agree he gave a good performance. I do not think, however that it was Oscar worthy. I have no idea who else was up against him that year. Some have mentioned Richard Burton and, obviously, I could find out if I really wanted to but I don't think it matters because it's doubtful my opinion would not change.

I realize the Oscars are decided relative to other performances that particular year but I've seen better performances that were not acknowledged. I don't begrudge Dreyfuss his award but I do not feel that performance merited such high praise.
