What kind of emotional problems did that one cop have?

The redneckish cop who gives Sondra Locke's character such a hard time.

He really drills her about being a hooker. One minute he's insulting her and trying to break her down emotionaly and the next minute he's fighting back tears and pleading with her to talk to him. Then he starts insulting her again.

Anyone have any opinions on what that guy's problem could be?

I am not a psychologist.
But I would assume that he was raised in a very repressive and stern household. He was probably taught by his parents that sex is a dirty and evil thing that must remain hidden. He was taught that all sex is evil and should be avoided except for the necessary "evil" act of procreation. No doubt he was caught with Playboy or other adult magazines by his parents and punished severely, probably beat bloody with his father's belt. More than likely he had also been caught masturbating and beat for that also. No doubt along with the beating he was derided with repeated references to the evils of his "self abuse" and made to feel like there was something wrong with him. All the while undergoing this abuse his father was probably a womanizer who cheated on his mother with every loose woman that passed through his small hometown, while extolling the virtues of abstinence. His mother looked the other way and tolerated his father's behavior by pretending to not know what he was doing. The cop's actions are a result of being raised in this environment of hypocrisy resulting in a the conflicting feelings of hate and disgust for the prostitute, yet having a extreme desire to experience being with her.

That makes sense.

I can see why you put in the disclaimer "I am not a psychologist". You make some huge assumptions and appear to reveal a lot about your own upbringing.

The cop was a pervert, used to having his way around women (due to his position in the town). He didn't mind spouting his vulgarity to Locke and other women b/c he faced no disciplinary actions by his superiors.

Leave the analyzing to those qualified and we won't ask about your childhood.

Why do people even THINK that "sex is evil", what are the reasons behind a thought of this caliber even crossing the minds of peoples consciousness like in the first place?

And with many thinking that its evil, we might as well not have it exist yet it exists a lot and even dominates most if not all of our lives, and not just in cases of procreation.

Man, both sexuality AND humanity is perplexingly complex at times, don't you think?

What's even funnier is that the cop is played by Bill McKinney who was one of the redneck rapists in Deliverance. Wouldn't you just love being an actor typecast in messed up pervert roles?

reply

Just enough so that he could be killed without the audience feeling conflicted.

I think you missed the joke. The cop was getting turned on talking about her line of work; i.e. he probably frequented prostitutes and was projecting (so to speak) his fantasies onto her.
