Recognizing locations

Has anybody else watching the show ever recognized a location from a scene in another TV show or movie or someplace they've actually been to in real life?

The stretch of freeway used in seasons 2 and 3 was also used in the TV movie Death Car on the Freeway.

Some of the scenes where they're on a 2-lane country road have looked similar to scenes from Duel.

When watching "Thrill Show" recently, in the scene where Ponch and Jon are following the tour bus around the corner at an angled intersection, I swear it looked like the same intersection that Marion turned at in Psycho just before turning into the car dealership.

In tonight's episode Hitchhiking hitch, the restaurant where Ponch and Jon were eating when that giant dude picked their motorcycles up is still there. Looks the same, but now it's Hawaiian instead of Chinese.

As a volunteer researcher and historian who works in partnership with the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area, which owns the historic Paramount Ranch movie ranch, I'm always looking for movies or episodes of tv shows that used Paramount Ranch. We knew of one episode, from 1982 I think, which the Park Service had a filming permit for, "The Spaceman Made Me Do It". I suspected that there might be others from earlier years and started recording episodes with certain keywords or plot points in the synopsis once the show started running on tv again. My hunch has paid off. As of this week, I've now found three other episodes. "Death Watch" (1979) and "Moonlight" (1981) both used the old Western town set as movie sets where stunt movies were being filmed in the storylines. The most recent was "Satan's Angel's" (1980) where part of the open landscape of the ranch was used as the park where Bonnie confronts a biker gang and is abducted by them. Many of the male officers and Sgt. Getraer were on the property for the later scene where they all find out about the kidnapping and rendezvous. I'm always very happy to find new titles to add to the NPS television list. While we have some clues to productions that used the ranch, in many cases it's a case of following hunches or simply watching a lot of the old shows. Since I get to watch stuff that I grew up with years ago in my youth, it is a lot of fun!

Lots of the controlled freeway sequences were shot on as-of-yet unopened portion of the 210 Foothill Fwy, at least seasons 1 and 2. Many downtown LA sequences (they were from Central) were off Central, Spring, and Alameda (1st and 2nd seasons)... Great deal of the off-roading/jumping/motorcycling was shot in and around the Gorman area, north of Magic Mountain... Man - we grew up in Downey but traveled many times there with our bikes and tents... Hillclimbs galore - and the creekbed - we would ride over the prop bridges all the time! Vic Morrow was killed along that creek bed doing the Twilight Zone Movie - RIP...Peace and Speedway

Just watched season 2 Neighborhood Watch with my Thos. Bros. Map 1999 - mostly in Pacific Palisades, but when I reference the map book it brings back the few times I drove through that area... In the late 70's and early 80's it was like Laguna Beach North - and when I watched this episode I recognized many alleys and wide access-type roads (I suspect Chautauqua leading up to Will Rogers and Topanga Park)... Also in full view while the skaters are approaching the "Florist" (played by flamer/tool Alan Sues) is the flood canyon called Pacific Palisades Park... NoHo Alpha Beta where the girl is in a cart has been a Trader Joes since forever (Seperate shoot, I suspect as the NoHo Alpha Beta is 20 miles away from Pac Palisades) Pretty cool episode, especially if you grew up in SoCal during this time... I did - and it was totally cool - I'm still living here, but the coolness is difficult to come by anymore - except for the precious beach cities and former small towns in and around North County OC or SD.

Are you aware that all these different shows are shot in and around the LA area? Of course scenes from other TV shows will be recognized
