LOL I agree with you...but at least you can see either the original or the amazing Judy Garland remake. Both were classics of their (and any other) time.
shareI agree as well. I saw this when it came out. I was in college and I reviewed it for my college newspaper. I thought it was awful. A total ego fest for Streisand (the camera is always on her, but it's really his story). No chemistry between Streisand and Kristofferson, and so phony. I do have a problem with the 1934 version, because while Janet Gaynor is terrific, Freddy March is such a ham, it's hard to have empathy for him. But the 1954 is one of the greatest movie musicals ever made. Judy Garland and James Mason had great chemistry and were sexy together. Witness the open mouthed kiss after Somewhere There's a Someone. Thankfully, Ron Haver worked hard and was able to restore it and we've got it as close to the original as we'll ever get it to be. (Same thing with Fritz Lang's Metropolis, which is a masterpiece, and while it's still missing 4 minutes, is as close to the original as we'll see, at least in my lifetime).
Skip the Streisand and see the Garland. It's so much superior. There's talk of another remake? Why? The Garland is close to perfect.
I saw this movie when it first came out I was 12 years old, I loved it then, and I just finished watching it. I can't say that I have watched the originals, I am sure they were great in their time. I also was a huge fan of Elvis, and couldn't imagine him in the movie. Yes, I am sure it was close to real life for him. However I don't believe it was too far off the mark for Kris, not that I know him personally! It is a great movie, in my opinion. If you don't like the movie, that too is your opinion. I too am sure you can rent the original.
I don't think that this is the worst movie in fact it is one of my favorites in the whole world. I just ordered the new dvd on Tuesday. And you spelled worst wrong, there is not supposed to be an e at the end.

Regarding the asinine comments about the two original versions: "I'm
sure they were good in their day." Give us a break. This piece of
festering pooh was lousy in 1976 and it's STILL lousy. The 1937 film,
now 70 years old, and the Garland remake are LESS dated. What does
THAT say about the chessy 1970s?! Streisand's hair alone is a laugh
riot. And let's not go there with the "performances" (Kris simply
showed up stoned and recited his lines). As for Streisand, the less
said the better. What a shame her immense ego is bigger than her
talent!

I'd wish you'd learn to type and spell and not share your ignorant foolish opinion. Since there are two prior "Star Is Born" movies, not to mention "What Price Hollywood" I am sure that you are too uninformed to even know what you are talking about. It doesn't matter if YOU love or hate this movie, it was a huge hit winning the Oscar, Golden Globes and even a Grammy. And I am sure Miss Streisand and her hairdresser laughed all the way to the bank!
I enjoyed it and loved the multi-plantinum soundtrack.

first of all, learn how to spell.........
and second, who cares what you think..... the movie did extremely well back then and today is one of my favorites. i loved the music except for kris's singing he stinks..... but him and streisand have good chemistry, did you know that the scene where she sings evergreen (which by the way is an amazing song) in the studio, she is actually singing it live!!!! and you have got to notice the way john norman (kris) looks at her while she sings it.....
I think this movie is incredibly "hit or miss" but in my humble opinion, I think this is one of the best movies of all time. Not only is the music fantastic (and I may well be tone deaf but I think Kris Kristofferson rocks also :D ) but the on-screen chemistry between Barbra and Kris is electrifying. I'm a life long Barbra fan anyway, but I think Kris's performance was sensational. Never before have I watched a film where I've initially really disliked a character and ended up completely in love.
And that final scene... need I say more...
Don't LOVE it, don't hate it. Truth be told, I'm ambivilent, just because of barb's off-screen claims that SHE wrote EVERGREEN, period. You sound like you have the album, so I shouldn't have to tell you, but just in case Barb's ego has had its desired affect, it should (and will) be noted that the lyrics to Evergreen were provided by Paul Williams. Mr. Williams has written a number of albums, and he and kenny ascher provided most of the songs for this movie. Would you like to make a friendly dollar bet that, in the special dvd commentary, their names aren't even mentioned? If they are, then I will happily send you two dollars, ....cd exchange rate and all.
